Box Office Round-up
What an incredible result! Ever since the first film opened in 2013, The Conjuring series has been one of the biggest and most successful horror series. The first film finished its run with £10.5m in 2013, the second film finished its run with £11.1m in 2016, and the third film finished its run with £9.6m in 2021. So it comes as something of a surprise that this fourth film, The Conjuring: Last Rites, has opened with a huge £6.8m, by far the biggest opening of the series and one of the biggest openings ever for a horror film, behind only It Chapter One and Two. This fourth film is going to set a series best total by quite some distance.
Olivia Colman and Benedict Cumberbatch comedy-drama The Roses fell to second but posted a good hold, adding £1.5m, a drop of 31% from last weekend. That takes its total after 10 days in cinemas to £5.4m. Olivia Colman starred in another British comedy last year, Wicked Little Letters, which finished on £9.6m, and The Roses looks to be aiming for a similar total.
Weapons came in third, adding £375k, which is down 55% from last weekend, its first hefty drop in a terrific run. That takes its total to £11.2m and it’s closing in on the final total of Final Destination: Bloodlines, which finished on £11.6m.
Freakier Friday came in fifth, adding £356k, which is down 52% from last weekend. That takes its total to £8.2m. The original Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan Freaky Friday finished its run with £6.6m in 2003 and this sequel has now sailed past that.
The Bad Guys 2 rounded out the top five, adding £331, which is down 59% from last weekend. That takes its total to £12.7m. It’s now just £1.1m behind the previous film’s final total.
Outside of the top five, Honey Don’t! opened in ninth with £169k, which includes £11k from previews.

The Buzz
Saipan is a dramatisation of the infamous encounter between Roy Keane and Mick McCarthy ahead of the 2002 World Cup. On the eve of the tournament, the Irish captain (Keane) forfeited his place in the squad at the team's preparation base in Saipan, Japan, following a heated disagreement with the Irish manager (McCarthy). The film stars Steve Coogan as McCarthy and Éanna Hardwicke as Roy Keane, and it had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival last week and reviews have been very positive. The Irish Independent called it ‘A film nobody asked for but what an unexpected treat’. Screen International said Coogan and Hardwicke are a ‘dream team’, while Deadline said ‘Éanna Hardwicke Is An Electric Presence In This Smart Irish Soccer Comedy-Drama’. It’s in cinemas from 1 January.
