Box Office Round-up
Yorgos Lanthimos is one of the most distinctive arthouse filmmakers in the world and he’s developing quite a following as Bugonia opened in the top spot with £986k (including £218k from previews). This is a big improvement over the £323k Lanthimos’ Kinds Of Kindness, also starring Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons, opened with in June 2024 but it’s some way off the £1.8m Poor Things opened with in January 2024.
Regretting You posted a great hold in second, falling 24% to £908k. It also had a terrific midweek last week and is now up to £3.9m, which bodes very well for the two Colleen Hoover adaptations hitting cinemas next year (Reminders Of Him in March, and Verity tbc).
Back To The Future is one of the most beloved films of the 20th century and its 40th anniversary re-release opened on Friday and to date has grossed £867k. This is the second high-profile re-release in the last few months that has hit the top five, with Jaws’ 50th anniversary re-release opening with £1.1m back in August.
Last weekend’s top film, Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere fell to fourth, adding £609k for a new total of £2.9m. In terms of recent music biopics, it is falling short of Better Man, which opened with £1.3m in December last year and finished on £7m but had the benefit of the Christmas holiday period. Hopefully Deliver Me From Nowhere can stick around for a few weeks longer and get closer to that figure.
Gabby’s Dollhouse: The Movie rounded out the top five, adding £598k, which is down 31% from last weekend. That takes its total to £5.2m and in terms of family tv shows that have made the leap to the big screen, it has now surpassed Peppa’s best, 2017’s Peppa Pig: My First Cinema Experience, which finished on £3.7m.
Outside of the top five, I Swear continues its strong run and has crossed the £5m mark in seventh.
Please note Netflix do not report box office grosses so K-Pop: Demon Hunters does not appear in the top 15.
Next Weekend
Predator: Badlands is the latest film in the sci-fi franchise. A young Predator outcast from his clan finds an unlikely ally on his journey in search of the ultimate adversary.
Die My Love is the new film from Lynne Ramsay (You Were Never Really Here, We Need To Talk About Kevin). Grace, a writer and young mother, is slowly slipping into madness. Locked away in an old house in and around Montana, we see her acting increasingly agitated and erratic, leaving her companion, Jackson, increasingly worried and helpless. Jennifer Lawrence and Robert Pattinson star.
The Choral stars Ralph Fiennes in a drama from Nicholas Hytner (The Lady In The Van). A choral society's male members enlist in World War I, leaving the demanding Dr. Guthrie to recruit teenagers. Together, they experience the joy of singing while the young boys grapple with their impending conscription into the army.
Anemone sees the legendary Daniel Day Lewis return to acting. In Northern England, a man heads out on a journey into the woods to reconnect with the estranged hermit brother with whom he shared a complicated past that was altered by life-changing events decades ago. Sean Bean co-stars.
A PAW Patrol Christmas is a special festive offering from the much-loved pups.
The Buzz
Crime 101 is a stylish crime-drama with an excellent cast. Chris Hemsworth stars as an elusive thief who is eyeing his final score but encounters a disillusioned insurance broker at her own crossroads, played by Halle Berry. As their paths intertwine, a relentless detective (Mark Ruffalo) trails them hoping to thwart the multi-million dollar heist they are planning. The cast also includes Barry Keoghan, Monica Barbaro, Nick Nolte, and Jennifer Jason Leigh. British filmmaker Bart Layton made his name with the BAFTA nominated documentary The Imposter and then followed it up with the impressive crime-drama American Animals. Crime 101 should be on of the best film for ABC1 men in February and March and here’s the first trailer:
