The Weekend Round-up

22 Jump Street got everyone jumping this weekend, taking the top spot, grossing £4.9m. The sequel grossed three times the opening weekend of 21 Jump Street (£1.6m) which bodes very well for the comedy franchise.

 

Maleficent continues to enchant the UK public falling a light 32%, once previews are removed, to £2.6m. The Angelina Jolie fantasy adventure has now grossed £11.1m and is on track to follow in the footsteps of Oz: The Great and Powerful and Snow White and the Huntsman’s and go on to cross the £15m mark.

X-Men: Days of Future Past dropped another 50% to £1.8m and a cume of £23.1m and it is now officially the highest grossing X-Men film of all time, having overtaken X2 (£20.7m). Edge of Tomorrow, which opened last week in third, drops a mere 35% to £1.2m, with a cume of £4.3m.

Seth Macfarlane’s A Million Ways To Die In The West fell 60% to £480k and with a cume of just £2.6m it looks like it’s not even going to top the opening weekend of Macfarlane’s last film, Ted (£5.9m). Grace of Monaco opened in ninth with £239k, which is less than half the £623k that Diana opened with 2013.

Overall the box office was down 21% from last weekend but up 51% from the same weekend last year, when After Earth opened in the top spot and Behind The Candelabra was the second highest new entry.

Next Weekend

With the World Cup starting there are no new major releases but the two biggest new entries are period drama Belle and horror film Oculus. Both have received strong reviews and will be looking to lure people away from the football.

The Buzz

The Fault in Our Stars opens in two weeks and has just had a huge opening in the US. Directed by Josh Boone, the film adaption of John Greens novel hits UK Cinemas on 19th June. How To Train Your Dragon 2 reviews are now being released and they’re all very positive. It could well be the summer’s biggest film.

Across The Pond

The Fault in our Stars proved to be one of the sleeper hits of the year opening with $48m and taking the top spot. The audience was 82% female and 79% under the age of 25. Maleficent took second, falling 51% to $34.3m and to date the fantasy adventure has grossed $128.2m. Edge of Tomorrow opened in third place with $28.8m, which is a bit lower than recent sci-fi movies like Elysium ($29.8m) and John Carter ($30.2m). In fourth, X-Men: Days of Future Past fell 53% to $15.2m for a cume of $189.6m. A Million Ways to Die in the West rounded out the top five with $7.3m and to date has grossed $30.3m.
