2009 continues to be the year for cinema

Latest Cinema Advertising Association (CAA) figures show cinema admissions are continuing to climb, with 13.5million cinemagoers heading to the big screen in October alone. The new figure marks a year-on-year increase of 3.8 per cent and ranks as the strongest October for cinema admissions in four years.

To date, the overall cinema admissions for 2009 stand at 142.3 million, a 2.7 per cent increase on the same period in 2008. Computer- animated comedy-adventure film UP, which was released in 3D in 261 sites, was the number one cinema release for October.Raking in almost £28m since its release on October 9th, the film took an impressive five times more than the second most successful film of the month, The Invention of Lying. As Ricky Gervais’ second attempt at a feature film, and taking £5.9m in October alone, it enters the monthly box office at number two. Read more

Falling polar bears put Plane Stupid cinema ad on course for controversy

Airline pollution activists Plane Stupid are on a collision course with the advertising regulator after launching a graphic cinema campaign that sees CGI polar bears falling to bloody deaths to highlight the impact of carbon emissions.

Plane Stupid's ad, which breaks in cinemas and online today, features dozens of animated polar bears falling from the sky onto a city centre, bouncing off skyscrapers and landing in the street and on the roof of a car, accompanied by blood-spurting special effects. Read more

Kylie's Agent Provocateur viral 'best in the world'

The raunchy viral for Agent Provocateur starring Aussie pop-princess Kylie Minogue riding a bucking bull in her underwear has been named the most successful celebrity viral campaign in the world.

The 2001 ‘Proof’ campaign, which was banned from being shown in cinemas, has clocked up more than 350 million hits on YouTube since its launch. Read more

Visit The Cinema To Get Money Off British Airways Flights

Cinemagoers are being given the chance to save even more money off their holidays courtesy of British Airways and a deal it has struck with Digital Cinema Media (DCM), the cinema advertiser.

The month long promotion will see large discounts off flights offered to those that go and see a movie. An ad voiced by Michael Sheen will direct those watching to go to a special website at www.ba.com/cinema that will offer an additional discount for cinemagoers on current BA prices for holidays including flights, hotels and cars. DCM Ramps Up Its Digital Offering

Digital Cinema Media (DCM), the market leader in UK cinema is expanding its digital capabilities with the news that every DCM multiplex cinema will have a digital/3D screen by the end of the year, half of its estate converted by 2010 and every screen in digital format by the end of 2011.

VW Launch £1M Polo's Timeless Film Festival

Volkswagen is launching Polo’s Timeless Film Festival, offering cinemagoers the chance to take a friend to see their favourite film at the cinema for free.

The Festival will be supported by a cinema ad campaign, created by advertising agency DDB London. The ad promotes VW’s latest Polo model and engages 35-55 year old women by tapping into their favourite films and leisure time. Read more

Barry M Aims For 'Fame' In First Ever Cinema Advertising Campaign

The one week push is part of an ongoing campaign to raise awareness of the Barry M make-up brand and sees it use the specific film – Fame – to target its key audience of 16 to 24-year-old females. It will be backed by TV and online advertising.

The 30-second commercial shows a rock chick model walking towards the audience carrying an electric guitar. As she performs the first chord she is surrounded by ribbons of colour, whilst her make-up continuously changes, demonstrating Barry M’s 400-plus palette of cosmetics. The camera pans in to a close up of the model’s eye make-up before a voice-over intones: “Barry M. Wake up your make-up.” Read more

FMCG Brands Increase Ad Spend In Cinema

2008 has seen FMCG brands divert more marketing budget towards cinema advertising, with a focus on sampling campaigns in the cinema foyer, notes the UK’s leading cinema advertising company, Digital Cinema Media.

Recent figures released by Nielsen Media Research reveal that FMCG ad spend on cinema in July 2008 was up a massive 73% year-on-year, whilst FMCG ad spend on other media such as TV remained flat. Ben & Jerrys ice cream, Kelloggs Special K and Cadburys Dairy Milk are among the biggest spending FMCG advertisers on cinema. Read more

PlayStation engages cinemagoers with new campaign

PlayStation is not a new brand to cinema, however this multi million pound deal is their biggest investment in the medium so far. Cinema was chosen as the lead broadcast medium due to its ability to deliver against the lucrative 16-34 year target audience and provide a unique environment in which an audio-visual message can be backed up with face-to-face dialogue and delivered to a targeted audience.
