Alice Retains Crown For Third Week

Alice in Wonderland continued her reign as queen of the box office at the weekend. Taking more than twice as much as second-placed Bounty Hunter, Alice In Wonderland’s popularity also contributed to box office takings for the top 15 films up an outstanding 71% on the same weekend last year. Gerard Butler and Jennifer Anniston helped Bounty Hunter to its solid debut total of £2.1m.

Meanwhile, comedy drama movie I Love You Philip Morris, starring Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor, surpassed expectations to gross more than £1m in its opening weekend. Martial arts action comedy film The Spy Next Door, starring Jackie Chan, also got off to a good start, grossing just under £700,000. Read more

Titans Stand Firm In Box Office Battle

Greek mythical epic Clash Of The Titans resolutely held its ground at the top of the box office rankings at the weekend. Despite the sunshine, the movie took nearly £2.5m, beating How to Train Your Dragon at £1.4m. Clash Of The Titans is also on track to become Australian actor Sam Worthington’s second-highest grossing film behind Avatar.

Following a solid weekend performance, family favourite How To Train Your Dragon has now grossed just under £10m. Kick-Ass, meanwhile, also held its position; the comic-book movie, which has been well received by critics, has racked up takings of 7m. Read more

Alice takes box office storm

Tim Burton’s version of Lewis Carroll’s captivating tale had a record-breaking weekend, grossing £10.6m in its first three days. It smashed all box office predictions and took £140m worldwide, making it the biggest opening so far this year.

It is also the best debut performance of all time for a 3D movie – James Cameron’s Avatar took only £8.5m during its opening weekend - as well as the top March opening of all time, beating Mr Bean’s 2007 movie by 68%. Read more

Alice in Wonderland to Enchant Cinemagoers on Friday

Alice In Wonderland 3D will now open nationwide in all cinemas on Friday. Tim Burton’s fresh take on Lewis Carroll’s bewitching tale boasts an all-star cast including Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, Anne Hathaway and newcomer Mia Wasikowska as Alice.

There are also starring roles for a menagerie of fantastical characters such as the White Rabbit, voiced by Michael Sheen, Alan Rickman’s caterpillar, Matt Lucas as Tweedledum and Tweedledee, and the Cheshire Cat, voiced by Stephen Fry. Read more

Charities are turning to cinema advertising in a bid to boost donations and awareness

Comic Relief, Action for Children and Women’s Aid are the latest charities tapping into the ABC1-dominated cinema audience with tailored campaigns.

With Red Nose Day this Friday 13 March, Digital Cinema Media, the market leader in cinema advertising, has teamed up with Comic Relief to launch a week-long campaign appealing to the public to “Do Something Funny for Money”. Read more

DCM Ties With Action For Children To Launch Free Cinema Season

Digital Cinema Media (DCM) the market leader in UK cinema advertising has tied up with leading children’s charity Action for Children to offer free cinema tickets.

The charity is offering free admission to those that download a voucher from the Action for Children website. Foyer activity in Picturehouse sites will also give cinemagoers the opportunity to fill in their details in exchange for a ticket to one of the screenings. Read more

Lingerie brand Bravissimo and car manufacturer Peugeot advertised against Warner Bros romantic comedy Valentine's Day as it delivered 761,713 cinema impacts in its first weekend.

Valentine's Day took £3.7m this weekend as cinemagoers celebrated the annual love fest of Valentine's Day, according to figures from Digital Cinema Media, with Bravissimo taking the opportunity to launch a cinema campaign, planned and bought by Media Vision and created by DigForFire. Read more

Cinema continues to buck media downturn

Cinema admissions continue to buck the economic downturn with January 2009 figures at a five-year high, buoyed by home-grown hits such as the feel-good Slumdog Millionaire, nominated for 10 Academy Awards.

Total admissions for January were 14,504,588, up 7.7% year-on-year – its strongest performance since January 2004, according to figures released by the Cinema Advertising Association. The latest NMR figures for January also show cinema spend increasing by 5.3% year on year at £9.5m. Read more

Cinema bucks media downturn

Latest Cinema Advertising Association (CAA) figures show cinema to be bucking the media downturn, with 2008 marking a bumper year for cinema admissions.

Overall, cinema admissions have grown 1.1% year-on-year, standing at 164.2 million for the year, from 162.4 million in 2007. 2008 also marked the highest summer cinema admissions for 40 years, with UK’s cinema venues attracting over 50 million visitors (53,642,237) between June and August this year, an increase of 5.6% year on year and standing as the most successful summer cinema period since 1969, with July the best month for admission in 2008 (over 21 million). 3D drives revenue for Avatar smash

Digital Cinema Media (DCM) is ramping up its commitment to 3D cinema as figures reveal that box office smash Avatar raked in more than 75% of its UK takings from the 3D format.

Figures from DCM suggest James Cameron's space epic has been a hit with 3D fans,with the new format accounting for 78% of its takings in the UK. The remaining 22% viewed film sans garish 3D spectacles. Read more

Cinema admissions beat winter blues to record tremendous November

Cinema admissions have seen a marked 10% increase on the same period last year, boosted by blockbuster features such as Men Who Stare at Goats and the posthumous concert film Michael Jackson's This is It.

According to the latest figures by the Cinema Advertising Association (CAA), the audience figures totalled 14,913,426 - making November 2009 admissions one of the most successful to date. Read more
