The Weekend Round-up
Like Thor: The Dark World and Iron Man 3, Captain America: The Winter Soldier experienced a post-Avengers boost, opening with £6m, including £1.9m from previews. That’s considerably more than the £3.3m Captain America: The First Avenger opened with in July 2011. That film finished its run with £10.4m, so The Winter Soldier has already grossed over half that amount in just five days. With the Easter holidays starting next weekend there’s still plenty more to come from the Captain and 50% of its gross to date is from 3D presentations. Read more

On its third week of release The Grand Budapest Hotel finally checked in to the top spot with another amazing hold, falling just 3% to £1.4m. With a cume of £6.3m, it’s closing in on Fantastic Mr. Fox’s final total of £9.2m, which would make it Wes Anderson’s highest grossing film ever. Even if it doesn’t make it that high, it’s still a remarkable performance when you consider that Anderson’s last three live-action films have grossed £2.1m (Moonrise Kingdom), £1.5m (The Darjeeling Limited) and £1.6m (The Life Aquatic).

Joe Evea, Commercial Director at Digital Cinema Media, looks at the relationship between Mobile and the big screen with 12Ahead, focusing on the mobile shift and how to engage cinemagoers via second screen.
I spent last Thursday engaged in a very interesting and, I must confess slightly drunken, conversation with a friend who studied anthropology at university. She spent most of the evening convincing me that the mobile phone has the capacity to fundamentally change human behaviour. Much like the invention of television, radio or even the motor car, mobile has engendered a dramatic shift in the way we interact both with each other and with the world around us. Such a shift, she contented, has changed our perception of what is and isn’t possible, transforming our expectations regarding our relationship with and access to information. Read more
