Tom Linay Reflects on the Festival de Cannes 2014

The 67th Cannes Film Festival came to a close last week and, as always, it has seen the very best of the world's filmmakers screening their latest work to an audience for the first time. With several strands that showcase the work of filmmakers of varying stature, there is often visually stimulating work throughout the programme, the kind of films that set the visual style and tropes that brands and ad directors will be looking to emulate over the next couple of years.

One director who has experienced a great deal of success at Cannes in recent years is Nicolas Winding Refn. His film Drive won the Best Director prize in 2011 and since then, both visually and musically, he has influenced numerous ad campaigns including his own ad for Gucci, starring Blake Lively. The Weekend Round-up

Godzilla wowed audiences this weekend past, debuting with £6.4m, which includes £1.1m from previews. Last week’s number one, Bad Neighbours slipped to the silver medal position, falling 83%, but when previews are removed, that’s only 57%. The Seth Rogen and Zac Efron comedy now has a cume of £11.8m after two weeks on release. Read more

Shortlist announced for DCM’s D&AD New Blood Awards 2014 brief

Digital Cinema Media (DCM) joined forces with D&AD this year, the British educational charity which exists to promote excellence in design and advertising, to discover and foster new talent through the D&AD New Blood Awards. This year’s nominations have now been announced and the prestigious awards ceremony will take place on 3 July.

Ten candidates have been short-listed for the DCM brief, with six being nominated to appear in D&AD’s 2014 book and the remaining four competing for the coveted D&AD yellow pencil. Read more

The Weekend Round-up

Bad Neighbours is laying down a serious marker for all other big comedies this year with a huge £8.4m debut. Thanks to its unusual Saturday opening, that figure includes £5.2m of previews but it’s still a hugely impressive performance. Its Friday to Sunday total of £3.3m is the highest debut for a live-action Seth Rogen film, beating 2011’s Paul (£3.2m) and it’s also the fifth highest Friday to Sunday opening weekend this year. The tonally similar 21 Jump Street opened with £1.6m in March 2012. Read more

First time cinema advertiser Spotify showcases new creative in cinema Silver Spot with Digital Cinema Media

Spotify, the digital music streaming service, showcased its new ad, crafted by Stereo Creative, in cinemas on 9 May. The deal for cinema screen time was booked by Starcom Mediavest via Digital Cinema Media (DCM).

The new creative appears in the Silver Spot, a premium position in the cinema ad-reel designed to allow brands to showcase longer form creative directly before the movie trailers. Read more

UK Cinemas Support National Deaf Awareness Week

UK cinema operators, including ODEON, Cineworld and Vue, are once again getting behind National Deaf Awareness Week by increasing their offer of subtitled screenings to deaf or hearing-impaired customers.

National Deaf Awareness Week, which this year runs from 19 to 25 May, is a chance for organisations across the UK to raise awareness and show their support for people with hearing loss. Read more

The Genesis Cinema, Mile End, has just turned 15 years-old. Congratulations to the team!

To celebrate this landmark, the Genesis hosted a week of celebrations from 5 May. The bulk of the celebrations was a carefully selected programme of top movies from the 1990’s, including Being John Malkovich, The Talented Mr. Ripley and Fight Club. Read more
