Mrs Brown Tops D’Box Office

The Weekend Round-up

Mrs Brown’s Boys D’Movie topped d’box office this weekend, opening with a hefty £4.3m. That’s the seventh highest debut of the year, above both Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Maleficent. Television to film adaptations have had an uneven history but Mrs Brown’s Boys D’Movie has already far outperformed the total run of both Keith Lemon: The Film and The Harry Hill Movie, neither of which could crack the £3m mark. Focus On The Inbetweeners 2

The first Inbetweeners film saw the hit TV show transfer onto the big screen, successfully providing its core fans with another installment of the British comedy, whilst creating new ones along the way. With the first film being one of the surprise blockbusters of the 21st century, grossing £45m at the UK box office, The Inbetweeners 2 is destined for similar success.

The upcoming film follows the gang as they unite in Australia, where Will, Neil and Simon head out to join their friend Jay following his promise of sun, sea and sex in the land of Oz. Whilst the plot has remained relatively under wraps by creators Iain Morris and Damon Beesley, the newly released trailer has only heightened the buzz surrounding the film scheduled for release on 6 August. Look Ahead To The Festive Season

The Christmas period presents a great opportunity for alcohol brands looking towards cinema to reach the elusive 18-34 audience. Although alcohol brands are not able to run with certain types of films, there are plenty of big titles throughout the festive period that can carry alcohol advertising.

The stand-out title of winter 2014 and potentially the whole of the year is Interstellar. Last time Christopher Nolan tackled big budget original sci-fi we got Inception, one of the greatest of all blockbusters, so it’s fair to have stratospheric expectations. Although the plot is being closely guarded it reportedly involves a group of scientists travelling through a wormhole to find new land to grow crops. Interstellar is released on 7 November and stars Oscar winning actor Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway and Jessica Chastain. Read more

‘The Fault In Our Stars’ Shines at UK Box Office

The Weekend Round-up

Tissues were in good use this weekend and not because of England’s early exit at the World Cup. Romantic weepie, The Fault In Our Stars opened with a very impressive £3.4m, which included £993k of previews. Since it opened with $48m in the US a couple of weeks ago, it was clear that the literary adaptation was connecting with audiences in the US and it proved to be the case here too. It also confirmed Shailene Woodley (Divergent) as one of the hottest new stars around. Read more

Spike Jonze Reveals His Favourite Ad and How to Stay Creative With Clients Around

Spike Jonze has made a lot of great commercials over the years. Crazy Legs for Levi's. Hello Tomorrow for Adidas. Lamp for Ikea, which won the Film Grand Prix in 2003.

But one of his favorite ads is one he could have directed, but didn't: Fallon's famous Balls commercial for Sony Bravia, which won a gold Lion here in 2006 (eclipsed only by Guinness's Nouitlove, which took the Film Grand Prix that year). Read more
