Box Office Round-up

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie has laid down a marker for the other big films of 2026. It has opened with a huge five-day total of £15m at the UK box office, which includes £5.5m from Wednesday and Thursday previews. Including Easter Monday it’s up to £17.7m, which already makes it the fifth highest grossing film this year. The Super Mario Bros. Movie opened with a Wednesday to Sunday total of £15.7m, with a larger number coming from the Wednesday and Thursday previews (£6.9m), probably due to a slightly later release date and more schools on holiday at that point. It finished its run with £54.9m, which is a realistic target for this sequel.

Project Hail Mary fell to second but is still performing exceptionally strongly. It added £3.4m over Friday to Sunday, which takes its total to £21.9m. Including Monday, it’s up to £22.9m. Those stellar audience scores are really starting to have an impact. Just a reminder that Ryan Gosling’s last film in cinemas was The Fall Guy, which finished on £12.4m, so Project Hail Mary is going to more than double that, and it could become the biggest film where he’s been the lead, reaching La La Land’s £30.7m.

The Drama made an excellent start, opening with £2.1m. Zendaya was in Challengers in April 2024, and that film opened with £1.6m and finished its run with £6.5m, which The Drama has to be looking at surpassing. Another great result.

The Magic Faraway Tree came in fourth with £2.1m. That takes its total after 10 days in cinemas to £7.6m, and with Easter Monday, it’s up to £8.3m. This is an adaptation of an Enid Blyton book, and we haven’t had many Enid Blyton adaptations in cinemas over the last decade. This time last year, Disney’s Snow White finished on £11.6m. The Magic Faraway Tree should surpass that over the next week or so.

Hoppers rounded out the top five, adding £543k across Friday to Sunday, which takes its total to £12.5m. It added a further £162k on Easter Monday.

Outside of the top five, Fuze opened in sixth with £302k. Dhurandhar: The Revenge is now up to £4.1m in seventh, and is now just £300k behind Pathaan’s final total of £4.4m.

The Buzz

Supergirl is the next film, after Superman, in James Gunn and Peter Safran’s new DC Comics Extended Universe. Milly Alcock plays Kara Zor-El, aka Supergirl, who joins forces with an unlikely companion (Jason Momoa as Lobo) on an interstellar journey of vengeance and justice when an unexpected adversary strikes too close to home. It hits cinemas on 26 June, which is right in the middle of the FIFA World Cup. It’s a great way to reach 16-34 adults, particularly 16-34 men during this period.

Across The Pond
