The Weekend Round-up

  • In the ultimate battle of Bear vs Shark, our furry friend triumped as Disney’s Christopher Robin knocked The Meg off the top spot to debut at number one on this weekend’s box office, grossing £2.5m. The previous instalment in the Pooh Cinematic Universe, Goodbye Christopher Robin, achieved a total of £2.9m at the end of its run, and so with a little help from Mickey Mouse Disney’s Christopher Robin will see its stick float to the other side of the bridge in first place.
  • In the ultimate battle of Shark vs ABBA, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again is saying knowing me, knowing two as it clings on to second place at the box office, knocking The Meg down to third. The celABBAration of joy added a massive £2.3m in its fifth week to take its total to £54.5m. Black Panther is screaming SOS as Mamma Mia overtook the Marvel titan to come in at number two in the overall 2018 box office top 10, as audiences cry gimme gimme gimme another ticket to the film. Is Avengers: Infinity War’s final total of £70.8 capable of being toppled? Can you hear the drums Black Panfernando?
  • The unstoppable force of Statham was halted this week, as The Meg sank down to third place at the box office. However, the distance between the top three this week is a shallow one, and the fishy feature film still added a massive £2.1m to take its total to £8.6m in its second week. The Meg continues to have the British public firmly in its jaws.
  • Fourth place sees another new entry, as Denzel Washington is back teaching bad guys how to solve simple maths problems in The Equalizer 2, opening with £1.98m. This tops the first film’s opening total of £1.9m, with the power of Denzel looking to the push the sequel to beating the original’s final total of £6.9m.
  • The top five is completed with another new entry, as The Festival debuted with a very respectable £1.4m. inbetweeners 2 opened with a massive £12.5m in 2014, so The Festival looks a long way off replicating the success of that film, however solid word of mouth should benefit the British comedy.
  • Some big hitters dropped out of the top five this week, with Incredibles 2 adding £1.4m to come in at number 6, seventh place going to Mission: Impossible – Fallout which now has a total of £20.1m, and Ant-Man and The Wasp falling to eighth but adding £1.17m.

Overall the box office is down 13% from last weekend and ranks 25th out of the latest 52 weekends. It is up 35% versus the same weekend last year when Dunkirk was still No.1 for its fifth weekend in a row.

The Buzz

Searching is a found-footage style thriller set all within the confines of computer and phone screens. After a local investigation is unsuccessful, David (John Cho) decides to search the one place no one has looked yet and the one place we all keep our secrets today. Reviews of the film have been very positive, with Kate Erbland writing for IndieWire “Search doesn't require any further narrative tricks to prove Chagnaty's ability to use seemingly huge constraints to weave a unique film, one that maintains a near-perfect connect with its audience.“ Tood McCarthy corroborates this in the Hollywood Reporter, writing “In all respects, what Chaganty and his team have pulled off here is something both novel and accomplished.” Searching opens in UK cinemas on 31 August.
