The Town Tipped For Oscar Nomination

The Town, directed by and starring Ben Affleck, opened to a fantastic $23.8m easily taking the weekend number one spot at the US Box Office. With commentators already talking about Oscar nominations for the film, The Town has been described by magazine Total Film, as "a triumph".

The town is Charleston. A blue-collar neighbourhood of US city Boston, where kids grow up skilled in their parents trades: carjacking, kidnapping and armed robbery. Doug MacRay (Ben Affleck) is desperate to leave his life of crime and so the drama unfolds. Read more

Ray Winstone stars in commercial to promote cinema advertising

BAFTA-nominated actor Ray Winstone, star of Nil By Mouth and Sexy Beast, is to star in a new ad as part of a nationwide campaign by Digital Cinema Media (DCM) to promote cinema as an advertising medium. Launching this week at DCM's annual industry event, Cinema2011, the ad is the result of a competition won by students from the National Film and Television School (NFTS).

The 40-second ad is the second in the series with the strapline 'Cinema: why advertise anywhere else'; the first ad, also produced as part of the competition with the NFTS, ran for three months in cinemas in January 2010 and generated over six million impacts. Read more

Resident Evil Tops UK and Stateside

Resident Evil: Afterlife 3D took the top spot at the UK Box Office last weekend grossing £1.7m. This is by far the biggest opening for the franchise, taking the record from 2007's Resident Evil: Extinction (£932K) perhaps in part to the buzz around the latest film's 3D release.

The horror opened Stateside on the same weekend and stormed straight to the top of the Box Office there too, grossing an estimated $26.7m. This is the seventh best September opening of all time and the highest opening for the franchise. Exit polls indicated the audience was 58% male with 49% being under 25 years old. Read more

Vue Entertainment and Digital Cinema Media (DCM) Sign 4 Year Advertising Deal

DCM and Vue Entertainment have signed a 4 year contract commencing 1st January 2011, giving DCM the exclusive rights to sell all of Vue Entertainment's on screen advertising covering all 67 of its state-of-the-art multiplex cinemas in the UK.

DCM was formed two years ago and since then it has pro-actively pursued innovative ways for advertisers to engage with cinema audiences. With the advent of digital and 3D cinema, DCM has identified creative and commercial opportunities such as pre-show content "From the Red Carpet" and integrated advertising campaigns focusing on effective branding and measured delivery. Top Spot For Grown Ups

Grown Ups, the new buddy-comedy starring Adam Sandler and Chris Rock shot straight to the top of the UK Box Office last weekend.

The film, which follows five former school friends who reunite after 30 years at the funeral of their high school basketball coach, took £2m between Friday and Sunday. Read more

Expendables Top Spot in UK & Stateside

Fighting its way to the top spot in its opening weekend was The Expendables which grossed an impressive £3.9m (including previews) in the UK. This marks the biggest opening result ever for both Jason Statham and Sylvester Stallone, beating Rocky Balboa's £3.6m opening. The Expendables has also beaten recent action-flick The A-Team which grossed £3.6m in its opening weekend.

In the US, the story was also about The Expendables which held on to the top spot for the second week in a row. The action film has grossed an estimated $64.9m to date in the States. BT plans postcode targeted cinema ad

BT is launching its first cinema advertising campaign in seven years and is using the medium to target specific geographical areas.

The campaign will market BT's Infinity fibre optic broadband offering and will run before films such as Eat, Pray, Love, featuring Julian Roberts, and Will Ferrell's The Other Guys. Read more
