Newcomer The Fighter packs a punch

Going to the cinema is still looking to be an extremely popular pastime this February as last weekend's takings for the top 15 titles beat the same weekend last year by 14%. Disney's Tangled remains at the top spot with its Box Office takings to date at £11.3m, surpassing The Princess & The Frog's £11.1m final gross.

Following in second place is The King's Speech, holding strong once again and fast approaching Slumdog Millionaire's £31.7m. David O. Russell's The Fighter packed a punch with a debut gross of £2.1m including previews. A personal best for the director. Read more

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides captures the fun, adventure and humour that ignited the hit franchise – this time in Disney Digital 3D.

In this action-packed tale of truth, betrayal, youth and demise, Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) is back, this time in hot pursuit of the Fountain of Youth. But the stakes are higher this time around with a mysterious woman from his past (Penelope Cruz) and the vicious pirate Blackbeard (Ian McShane) lurking out there in the Caribbean waters. Read more

Tangled Ties Up £5.1M

Finally knocking The King’s Speech off the top of the Box Office this weekend was Disney’s 50th animated feature film, Tangled. Grossing £5.1M in its first three days in the UK, it is the biggest opening result of 2011 so far. Box Office last weekend was up an impressive 28 % on the same weekend in 2010, despite Avatar’s huge success in January of last year.

Tangled, Disney’s take on the Brother’s Grimm fairytale Rapunzel, more than doubled the Box Office of Disney’s last animated release, The Princess and the Frog, which began its run just under a year ago with £2.22m. Read more

King's Speech takes £4M

The King's Speech grossed an amazing £4.4m in its second weekend, up +25% on its opening weekend. The royal drama’s gross to date now stands at £10.8m in the UK, and shows no signs of slowing down.

The Brit-film has now surpassed P.S. I Love You as the highest grossing film distributed by Momentum Pictures. According to IndieLondon.co.uk the incredible performance prompted Xavier Marchand, managing director of [UK distributor] Momentum Pictures, to comment:  “We are blown away by the second weekend’s box office for The King’s Speech. Feedback from the cinemas suggests repeat viewing and a broadening of the audiences towards students and teens. We’re still getting really positive reactions from cinemas and fans across the UK. The King’s Speech is a British crowd pleaser.” Read more
