The deadline for the inaugural Digital Cinema Media Awards has been extended to Friday 17 July. The awards scheme, run in association with Campaign and Media Week, will celebrate and reward the best advertising work showcased in cinema by the media industry over the last year.

The BFI (British Film Institute) has launched ‘Britain on Film’, an archive-based initiative through which thousands of unseen films have been digitised and will be made available for free to the public on the BFI Player platform.

Last weekend Reel Cinema Bridgnorth held a special screening of the 1969 film Battle of Britain. The unique commemorative event for the 75th anniversary of the battle was attended by two of the 28 surviving Spitfire pilots from the historic battle. Squadron Leader Tony Pickering, who flew hurricanes and later spitfires, and Flying Officer Ken Wilkinson, who flew spitfires under the legendary Douglas Bader, were invited as guest speakers for the evening to help raise money for the RAF Benevolent Fund.

Minions held off the challenge from two major new entries and held on to the top spot for the second successive weekend. A further £6.2m means the animated blockbuster has now grossed a massive £21m. While that’s lower than the £22.9m that Despicable Me 2 had banked after its second weekend, the Despicable Me 2 total included an extra weekend of previews. Read more
