Leonardo DiCaprio, considered a favourite in the lead actor field, was nominated for his role in The Revenant, as was his co-star Tom Hardy, who received a nod in the supporting actor category. Eddie Redmayne, hoping to repeat his 2015 success, competes against Leonardo DiCaprio for the best actor award. The best actor category also sees nominations for Michael Fassbender for biopic Steve Jobs, Matt Damon for space saga The Martian and Bryan Cranston for Trumbo, in which he portrays real-life Hollywood screenwriter Dalton Trumbo.

Charlotte Rampling is in the running for best actress for her role in marital drama 45 Years, facing competition from Cate Blanchett for Carol, Brie Larson for Room, Jennifer Lawrence for Joy and Saoirse Ronan for Brooklyn. Kate Winslet is up for best supporting actress.

Eight films were nominated for best picture, with Spotlight, Bridge of Spies, The Big Short, Room and Brooklyn completing the list.

The nominations were announced at the Oscars’ headquarters in Beverley Hills by John Krasinski, Guillermo del Toro, Ang Lee and Academy president Cheryl Boone Isaacs.

The winners will be revealed at a ceremony at Hollywood’s Dolby Theatre on 28 February, hosted by Chris Rock.
