Box Office: National Cinema Weekend sees familiar films thrive

On National Cinema Weekend, Spider-Man: Brand New Day secured the top spot for the sixth successive weekend.

On National Cinema Weekend, Spider-Man: Brand New Day secured the top spot at the UK box office for the sixth successive weekend, adding £1.6m, which is down 41% from last weekend. It’s worth remembering that the majority of tickets were £4 this weekend. That takes its total to £96.3m.  It is now the 5th biggest film of all-time in the UK & Ireland. £100m total is still a possibility, a total only two films have reached in the past (Skyfall and Star Wars: The Force Awakens). In terms of previous Tom Holland Spider-Man films, Homecoming finished on £30.8m, Far From Home finished on £37.4m and No Way Home finished on £97.3m. A remarkable box office progression.

The Odyssey came in second once again, adding £1.5m, which is down 36% from last weekend. That takes its total to a HUGE £82.8m and it is now the 11th biggest film of all-time in the UK & Ireland. It would have been comfortably the biggest film of the year in 2024 and 2025 and now it’s nailed on to overtake Top Gun: Maverick, the biggest film of 2022, which finished with £83.9m.  

Insidious: Out Of The Further had a good third weekend, adding £758k, which is down 44% from last weekend. That takes its total to £6.5m and it has already overtaken the final total of 2015’s Insidious Chapter 3 (£4.1m) and 2018’s Insidious: The Last Key (£5.3m).

Toy Story 5 came in fourth on its 12th week, adding £418k, down just 13% from last weekend. That takes its total to £58.2m and it’s now the fourth biggest animated film in UK & Ireland history, behind Toy Story 3, Toy Story 4, and Inside Out.

The End Of Oak Street rounded out the top five, adding £354k, which takes its total to £6.9m.

Outside of the top five, The Death of Robin Hood opened in sixth with £316k, which includes £71k from previews after opening on Wednesday.

Next Weekend

  • Pressure stars Andrew Scott, Brendan Fraser and Kerry Condon in a World War II drama. In the tense 72 hours before D-Day, General Dwight D. Eisenhower (Fraser) and Captain James Stagg (Scott) face an impossible choice - launch the most dangerous seaborne invasion in history or risk losing the war altogether. It’s in cinemas from Wednesday.
  • Oasis: Don’t Look Back In Anger is a documentary of the much-loved Oasis reunion tour. It’s in cinemas from Wednesday.
  • Practical Magic 2 is the sequel to the modest 1998 hit that has since become a cult favourite. A multi generational family of witches, cursed to be loveless for centuries, attempts to break the spell by confronting dark secrets and sacrificing for each other. Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman star.

The Buzz

The Debut is the next directorial effort from Jesse Eisenberg, who won an Oscar for his previous film, A Real Pain. Julianne Moore plays an unassuming housewife who is unexpectedly cast in a community theatre production and she loses herself in the role under the spell of a strong-willed director (Paul Giamatti). It premiered at the Telluride Film Festival at the weekend to glowing reviews, with Julianne Moore’s performance being singled out for particular praise. Variety said ‘Julianne Moore Is Astonishing in Jesse Eisenberg’s Funny and Dizzying Community-Theater Comedy’. The Playlist said ‘Julianne Moore Is Transformative In Jesse Eisenberg’s Brilliant Musical Comedy’. It closes the 70th BFI London Film Festival next month and it hits cinemas on 15 January.

Across The Pond

On the Labor Day holiday weekend, The Odyssey retook the top spot, adding $13m, which takes its total to a huge $584.8m Spider-Man: Brand New Day fell to second, adding $10.8m, which takes its total to $910.6m and it’s now the second biggest film of all-time in North America and it’s coming for the number one spot. By Any Means opened in third with $7.4m, while Coyote vs. Acme fell to fourth, adding $7.1m for a new total of $29.6m. The 20th Anniversary re-release of Pixar’s Cars opened in fifth with $6.1m.
