Box Office Round-up

Thunderbolts* is the latest Marvel film to top the box office, opening with £6m, which includes £1m from Thursday previews. That’s the fourth biggest opening weekend of 2025 and this weekend, particularly in the US, is considered the start of the summer movie season. This weekend last year saw The Fall Guy open with a Friday to Sunday total of £3.2m, so Thunderbolts* has got the 2025 summer movie season off to a better start than that film did in 2024. Thunderbolts* added a further £1.8m on bank holiday Monday for a four-day total of £7.8m.

Sinners stayed in second and posted another great hold, falling just 23% to £1.9m. It added a further £646k on bank holiday Monday for a new total of £11.3m. This is the fourth collaboration between Michael B. Jordan in a lead role, and Ryan Coogler as filmmaker. 2016’s Creed opened with £2.2m, and finished with a total of £5.9m, so Sinners has flown past that and it has now surpassed Creed II’s (produced, not directed by Coogler) final total of £10.1m.

A Minecraft Movie continued its hugely impressive run adding £1.3m from Friday to Sunday, down 49% from last weekend, which takes its total to a HUGE £53.3m. It added a further £808k on bank holiday Monday, by far its busiest day of the weekend, for a new total of £54.1m and it’s closing in on the final total The Super Mario Bros Movie posted two years ago (£54.9m).

The Accountant 2 stayed in fourth adding £467k from Friday to Sunday, which takes its total to £1.7m. It added a further £171k on Monday for £1.9m to date. This is a disappointing performance for a sequel to a well-liked first film, which finished its run with £5.3m.

Until Dawn rounded out the top five, adding £332k from Friday to Sunday, which takes it to £1.2m. It added another £105k on Monday for a new total of £1.3m. It’s joining the likes of recent horrors Wolf ManHeart Eyes and Tarot that fell short of the £2m mark.

Outside of the top five, Bluey, the hugely popular cartoon character, is back in cinemas with Bluey At The Cinema: Lets Play Chef Collection. It opened with £179k, which is very similar to the £181k Bluey At The Cinema: Family Trip Collection opened with in August of last year. Lets Play Chef then had a bumper Monday, adding £131k for a four-day total of £310k. Family Trip Collection finished with £1.1m so that’s the target for Let’s Play Chef Collection.

Two South Asian releases landed in the lower reaches of the top 10, as Retro opened with £163k (including £59k from previews) and Hit: The Third Case opened with £151k (including £96k from previews. Including Monday Retro is up to £177k and Hit: The Third Case is up to £159k.

Next Weekend

The Wedding Banquet is a romantic comedy starring Bowen Yang from SNL, Lily Gladstone, and Kelly Marie Tran. Min, a gay man, makes a deal with his lesbian friend: a green-card marriage for him, in exchange for in vitro fertilization treatments for her. Plans evolve as Min's grandmother surprises them with a Korean wedding banquet.
The Surfer is the latest dark thriller starring Nicolas Cage. He stars as a man who returns to the idyllic beach of his childhood to surf with his son. When he is humiliated by a group of locals, the man is drawn into a conflict that keeps rising and pushes him to his breaking point.
Ocean’s With David Attenborough is a brand new documentary that comes to cinemas on Thursday. Attenborough explores the planet's undersea habitats, revealing the greatest age of ocean discovery and emphasizing the ocean's vital importance while exposing its problems and highlighting opportunities for marine life recovery. It’s in cinemas from Thursday.

The Buzz

Now You See Me: Now You Don’t is the third film in the fun, action series lead by Jesse Eisenberg, Isla Fisher, Dave Franco and Woody Harrelson as the Four Horseman. The first Now You See Me was a break out hit in 2013 delivering 1m DCM admissions and over £11.2m at the box office. This fourth instalment sees the Four Horsemen reunite to recruit three highly-talented illusion magicians in a heist and steal the largest queen diamond in the world from a family crime syndicate. The quality cast sees newcomers Rosamund Pike, Dominic Sessa, Ariana Greenblatt and Justice Smith join Morgan Freeman and Mark Ruffalo, and it’s got a great release date of 14 November. It should be one of the best ways to reach 16-34 adults in the run-up to Christmas and here’s the first trailer: https://youtu.be/vIi8uwkqsaU?feature=shared.
