Box Office Round-up

On a huge bank holiday weekend, Lilo & Stitch opened with £8m from Friday to Sunday, the third highest opening weekend of the year to date, only behind A Minecraft Movie and Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy. After previewing on Wednesday and Thursday, it delivered a five-day opening of £9.6m. It then added a further £3.3m on Bank Holiday Monday for a six-day total of £12.9m. On this weekend two years ago, The Little Mermaid opened with a Friday to Sunday total of £5m, and finished its run with £27.4m, so Lilo & Stitch is heading to a total well north of that.

Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning opened in second with a Friday to Sunday total of £6.2m. It also previewed on Wednesday and Thursday, delivering a five-day total of £8.6m. It then added a further £2.2m on Monday for a six-day total of £10.8m. The previous instalment, Dead Reckoning, opened on a Monday, so a like-for-like comparison is difficult, but in its first seven days it banked £10.4m, so this new instalment has surpassed that and from one fewer day. Dead Reckoning finished its run with £26.6m, so that’s the target for The Final Reckoning

Final Destination: Bloodlines added £1.7m on its second weekend, which takes its total to £7m. It then added a further £515k on Monday for a new total of £7.5m. In terms of final totals, The Final Destination (the fourth instalment) holds that title with £12.8m, while the lowest performing film in the series, surprisingly was the follow up, Final Destination 5, which finished its run with £5.5m. Final Destination: Bloodlines has sailed past number 5 and has its sights set on number 4.

Wes Anderson’s latest film, The Phoenician Scheme, opened in fourth with £771k. It then added £286k on Monday for a four-day total of £1.1m. Anderson’s previous film, Asteroid City, opened with £1.2m in June 2023, and finished its run with £5m, so The Phoenician Scheme will be hoping for a similar total.

Thunderbolts* fell to fourth adding £579k from Friday to Sunday. It then added £243k on Monday for a new total of £15.2m Captain America: Brave New World finished its run on just over £18m, which looks just out of reach for Thunderbolts*.

Outside of the top five, Sinners has crossed the £15m mark in sixth – an amazing result. South Asian release, Narivetta, opened in 10th with £44k.

The Buzz

Caught Stealing is the latest film from filmmaker Darren Aronofsky (Black Swan, Requiem For A Dream, The Wrestler) and is an adaptation of Charlie Huston’s novel. Burned-out ex-baseball player Hank Thompson (Austin Butler) unexpectedly finds himself embroiled in a dangerous struggle for survival amidst the criminal underbelly of 1990s New York City, forced to navigate a treacherous underworld he never imagined. Zoë Kravitz, Regina King, Matt Smith, Bad Bunny and Vincent D'Onofrio are in the impressive cast and this is shaping up to be one of the stand-out films of Q3, particularly for ABC1 men. It’s in cinemas on 29 August.
