DCM caught up with KC Suri, owner of Reel Cinemas, to discuss what makes Reel Cinemas stand out and his favourite cinema memories.

How did you end up in the world of cinema and what do you love about it?

I purchased the Art Deco Curzon cinema in Loughborough with the intention of a property project. I fell in love with the building and decided to keep it as a cinema after which came the birth of what we know today as Reel Cinemas. It’s always a proud moment for me when people tell me they've had a great experience at Reel Cinemas and when people talk about films they have seen or are coming up.

Tell us a bit about your business/what’s unique about your cinema(s)?

Reel Cinemas has grown to 13 cinemas across the UK and remains a true local and family owned independent cinema operator. Reel Cinemas currently has plans to open 10 new cinemas over the next three years in selected locations nationwide. Reel Cinemas differentiates itself by providing a great and clean environment within which to experience a full range of films along with fantastic customer service.

Do you run any special events/screenings at your cinema?

Yes we hold charity and private screenings, Reel has got everything you need to make it a red carpet occasion. In addition we hold special events and have a variety of live satellite broadcasts.

What excites you most about the future of the cinema industry?

The digital technology opportunities coming up on the big screen.

What do you see as the cinema industry’s biggest challenge?

The biggest challenge is getting people to actually leave their homes to go and watch a film at the cinema. There is so much home entertainment and other leisure offers in the market place.

Who do you most admire in the cinema industry, and why?

I think highly of good film directors; they are a good translator of worlds, peoples and stories. They take all these elements and create films that are phenomenal.

What is your favourite film and why?

Million Dollar Baby. An uplifting and inspiring film. It is more than a boxing film about a woman, it’s a gritty symbol of the value of life, and of when we discover we have fulfilled our potential.

What do you think is the most iconic cinema ad?

The Steve McQueen Ford Puma ad directed by Paul Street. McQueen is seen steering the Puma through San Francisco to the films original 60’s soundtrack I remember this ad well. Very ahead of its time in many ways.

What are you most excited about for the rest of the year and what film are you most looking forward to?

While I have to wait until the end of the year I am eager to see Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. This is the final film in the Star Wars episodic trilogy and I can’t wait to see how they tie it all together.

What is the best advice you have ever been given?

Do it well, or don’t do it at all.
