2012 saw 'Skyfall' burst through the £100m barrier, smashing the record set by 'Avatar' in the process, while the cinema industry's £200m investment in digital projectors saw DCM switch to digital on 28 September. UK Box Office 4 - 6 January 2013

Unlike the rest of us, cinema is not experiencing a post-Christmas hangover with the box office delivering another super-strong weekend, up 61% from the same weekend last year. That’s now TWELVE consecutive weekends where the box office has been up on the equivalent from a year ago. For the fourth weekend in succession, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey 3D came out on top but it was run mighty close by The Impossible.

The Hobbit fell 41% to £4.1m and it now stands on an imposing £44.9m. At its current rate, it has a good chance of at least catching the lowest performing Lord Of The Rings film, The Two Towers (£57.6m). True life tsunami drama, The Impossible made a very promising start with £4m, with £1.6m of that coming from Tuesday to Thursday previews. Those previews enabled it to finish ahead of Life Of Pi 3D, which continued its terrific performance with a further £3.4m, taking its cume to £17.9m. With Oscar and BAFTA nominations due out in the next week, there should be plenty more to come. Read more

UK Box Office 7 - 9 December 2012

Like a festive Avengers, Rise Of The Guardians 3D ascended to the top of the box office this weekend easing 19% to £1.6m. Wit a cume of £4.1m, showing that it is well on its way to becoming a family favourite. Last December, Puss In Boots opened with £2m, almost exactly the same as Rise Of The Guardians last weekend, and went on to gross £1.3m on its second weekend on its way to a final total of £15.6m. It’s not unreasonable to assume a similar level of performance for ROTG.

Skyfall dropped back to second spot with a further £1.4m, taking its tally to a record breaking £96.3m, smashing the previous record set by Avatar in 2009. It has not just been a success in the UK, it has grossed over $918m worldwide and may well break the $1bn barrier, which is an amazing achievement in itself but even more impressive when you consider that the last and previously highest grossing Bond film, Quantum Of Solace achieved $586m worldwide. UK Box Office 30 Nov - 2 Dec 2012

Bond is back! Well, back at the top of the UK box office. Another £2.3m on Skyfall's sixth weekend of release for the all-conquering blockbuster takes it to £94.1m and it has now become the UK’s highest grossing film of all time, beating Avatar. An incredible achievement from one of the UK’s best loved film franchises. The film that kept Skyfall from the top spot for the previous two weekends was relegated to second place as The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2 fell 59% to £2.2m. It still managed to surpass Breaking Dawn Part 1’s final total of £31.1m to become the biggest grossing Twilight film. It now stands on £31.4m and a final total of around £35m looks likely.

In third place was this week’s highest new entry and the year’s big Christmas animation, Rise Of The Guardians 3D.  A healthy £2m opening puts it on almost on a par with last year’s big Christmas themed film, Arthur Christmas, which opened with £2.1m. With three further weekends before Christmas, expect it to improve on that opening figure quite considerably. 42.5% of its box office came from 3D presentations. Fourth spot was taken by the other Christmas film currently on general release, Nativity 2: Danger In The Manger, which fell 25% from last weekend to £1.2m and a cume of £3.2m. Read more
