Let The Games Begin!

Ask any cinema goer and they’ll agree that the immersive big screen experience provides complete escapism from daily life. It’s no wonder, therefore,  that gamers are avid cinema goers.

Recent TGI (Q3 2012) data shows that 64% of cinema goers own a games console (with 32% of these bought in the last 12 months), spending above the UK average and making up a whopping 83% of the total £1.6bn spent on consoles, and 86% of the £1.4bn spent on games in the last year.

This explains the recent crop of video game to movie conversions and, in some circumstances, movie to video game adaptations. In the last couple of months it has been announced that Michael Fassbender will be arming himself with a hook blade and sword as he takes on the one of the biggest-selling games of the current generation in Assassin’s Creed.

Pleasing ‘Kojima-ites’ worldwide is the news that a Metal Gear Solid movie adaptation has been announced. Columbia Pictures will be the studio backing the project, and Avi Arad, who produced X-Men and Iron Man, among others, will produce.

Looking at the near future sees the release of two game giants to the big screen. At the end of September Resident Evil: Retribution 3D leaps its way onto cinema screens nationwide ready to scare and shock in awesome 3D. Fast forward five weeks and Silent Hill: Revelation 3D hits the big screen hoping to continue the thrills left by the 7 Silent Hill video games to date. In a few months and we get to see the essence of synergy in Wreck-It Ralph 3D. Wreck-It Ralph is the nine-foot-tall, 643-pound villain of the arcade video game Fix-It Felix Jr., in which the game's titular hero fixes a building that Ralph destroys. For over 30 years, Ralph has been doing the same job and has become tired of being the bad guy. Wanting to prove he can be a good guy and not just a villain, Ralph escapes his game through the power cord...

The quality of the cinema screenin digital quality, augmented by great sound quality gives advertisers the perfect platform to reach their core audience in a stunning and engaging manner. Perhaps that's why video game trailers are often described as 'Cinematic'.
