DCM held a series of events at Advertising Week Europe last week including an interesting discussion between Viceroy's House director, Gurinder Chadha, and our Head of Film, Tom Linay.

The session saw the Filmmaker and Screenwriter reminisce on some of her past experiences in the film business as well as offer her thoughts on the power of cinematic storytelling.

She also spoke on diversity and the reason for getting into the industry being because there were no others like her making films. She outlined the importance of telling stories that mean something to her and touched on her latest, Viceroy’s House, which has taken £3.6m at the UK box office.

“All kinds of storytelling, whether it’s an ad, a doc, a book; it speaks to you at a particular moment in time and means something,” she said. “With Viceroy’s House, I was inspired to do something about my history and background, having visited where my ancestors were from.”

She said that because the story, which is based in 1947 and sees Lord Mountbatten assume the post of last Viceroy, charged with handing India back to its people, was historical, it had to be told with responsibility.

She also outlined that the fact that the refugee crisis in Europe along with Brexit, which broke when Chadha was editing the film, have occurred, demonstrates how film can cut through to culture and capture the zeitgeist.
