Box Office Round-up
Weapons continues a great year for original horror titles, and for Warner Bros. too, who in the last few months have released Sinners and Final Destination: Bloodlines. Weapons stayed in the top spot, adding £1.6m, which takes its total to £6.3m after two weekends in cinemas. At the same stage of its run, Sinners was on £7.3m, so Weapons isn’t too far behind. Another great result for original thrillers.
Materialists is the latest film from Celine Song (Past Lives) and it opened in second with £1.3m, which includes £456k from Wednesday and Thursday previews. Past Lives opened with £516k in September 2023 and finished its run with £3.1m, so Materialists looks heading for a total north of that.
Coolie is the latest South Asian release to crack the top five, opening with £940k, which includes a punchy £456k from Wednesday and Thursday previews. The biggest south Asian film of 2025 is Saiyaara with £2.9m, with L2: Empuraan in second with £1.4m. Coolie looks like it’s going to take that second spot.
Freakier Friday came in fourth, adding £916k for a new total of £4m. The original Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan Freaky Friday finished its run with £6.6m in 2003 and this sequel looks set for a similar total, if not slight more.
The Fantastic Four: First Steps rounded out the top five, adding £688k for a new total of £20.8m. In terms of this year’s Marvel titles, Captain America: Brave New World finished on £18m and Thunderbolts* finished on £16.2m, so The Fantastic Four: First Steps is the biggest Marvel film of the year.
Outside of the top five, there was a flurry of new entries in eighth, ninth and 10th. Horror title Together opened in eighth with £504k, south Asian action film War 2 opened in ninth with £503k (including £211k from previews), and Nobody 2 opened in 10th with £476k.
Next Weekend
The Life Of Chuck is an adaptation of a Stephen King novella and stars Tom Hiddleston, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Karen Gillan and Mark Hamill. It’s a life-affirming, genre-bending story about three chapters in the life of an ordinary man named Charles Krantz. It’s in cinemas from Wednesday.
Eddington is the latest film from Ari Aster (Midsommar, Hereditary) and stars Joaquin Phoenix, Emma Stone, Pedro Pascal and Austin Butler. In May of 2020, a standoff between a small-town sheriff and mayor sparks a powder keg as neighbour is pitted against neighbour in Eddington, New Mexico.
Sorry Baby is the directorial debut of writer-director-star Eva Victor. It’s a drama about Agnes, who rebuilds her life after a tragic event. Naomi Ackie and Lucas Hedges co-star.
The Buzz
Marty Supreme is the next film from Josh Safdie, one half of the Safdie brothers, who made the excellent Uncut Gems. It’s a comedy-drama about Marty Mauser, a young man with a dream no one respects, who goes to extreme lengths in pursuit of greatness as a table tennis player. Mauser is played by Timothée Chalamet and he’s joined by Gwyneth Paltrow and Tyler Okonma (aka Tyler The Creator). The other half of the Safdie brothers, Benny Safdie, is directing another sports-themed film in Q4 – October’s The Smashing Machine, starring Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt, so it’s one of Q4’s interesting narratives over which one performs better. Both films look great for reaching ABC1 men. Marty Supreme is in cinemas from Boxing Day.
Across The Pond
Weapons stayed in the top spot, adding $25m for a terrific new total of $89m. Freakier Friday stayed in second, adding $14.5m for a new total of $54.8m. This week’s highest new entry is Nobody 2, which opened with $9.3m. The Fantastic Four: First Steps fell to fourth, adding $8.8m for a new total of $247m and The Bad Guys 2 rounded out the top five, adding $7.5m for a new total of $57.2m.
