Box Office Round-up

Weapons continues its terrific run at the box office, coming in first for the third successive weekend. Weapons added £1.1m from Friday to Sunday, which takes its total to £8.7m. It added a further £261k on bank holiday Monday for a new total of £8.9m. Weapons is going to be the third horror film this year to cross the £10m mark, after Sinners and Final Destination: Bloodlines. Four, if you include 28 Years Later.

Freakier Friday posted a great hold on its third weekend, falling just 19% to £740k from Friday to Sunday. That takes its total to £5.8m and it added a further £195k on Monday for a new total of just over £6m. The original Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan Freaky Friday finished its run with £6.6m in 2003, and this sequel now looks set for a total a healthy amount above that.

Materialists is the latest film from Celine Song (Past Lives) and it added £554k from Friday to Sunday, which takes its total to £2.6m. It added £135k on Monday for a new total by £2.7m. Past Lives opened with £516k in September 2023 and finished its run with £3.1m, so Materialists is heading for a total north of that.

The Bad Guys 2 fell just 6% to £511k for a new total of £10.2m. It added a further £160k on Monday for a new total of £10.4m. The first film finished on £13.8m, so this sequel is set for a similar total.

The Fantastic Four: First Steps rounded out the top five, adding £508k for a new total of £22m. It added £157k on Monday for a cume of £22.2m. In terms of this year’s Marvel titles, Captain America: Brave New World finished on £18m and Thunderbolts* finished on £16.2m, so The Fantastic Four: First Steps is the biggest Marvel film of the year.

Outside of the top five, The Life Of Chuck opened in sixth with £486k, which includes £173k from previews. Including Monday it’s up to £573k. Jurassic World: Rebirth crossed the £35m mark in eighth, which means this week it will surpass the final total of the previous Jurassic World film, Dominion, which finished on £35.1m.

Next Weekend

The Roses is an adaptation of Warren Adler’s darkly-comedic book The War Of The Roses. Olivia Colman and Benedict Cumberbatch star as a married couple who get involved in a messy separation.

Austin Butler plays burned-out ex-baseball player Hank Thompson, who unexpectedly finds himself embroiled in a dangerous struggle for survival amidst the criminal underbelly of 1990s New York City. Regina King and Zoë Kravitz co-star.

Jaws (50th Anniversary) is the re-release of Steven Spielberg’s classic thriller.

Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire (20th Anniversary) is the re-release of the fourth instalment in the popular fantasy series.

The Buzz

Anemone is the directorial debut of Ronan Day-Lewis, son of Daniel Day-Lewis. It’s a family drama exploring the complex and profound ties that exist between brothers, fathers, and sons. A first feature from a new filmmaker does not usually result in one of the most exciting prospects of the year, but Ronan has roped in his dad, the three time Best Actor Oscar winner, for his first acting role since 2017’s Phantom Thread. The excellent cast also includes Sean Bean and Samatha Morton and has released a very striking first trailer. It’s in cinemas from 7 November.

Across The Pond

K-Pop Demon Hunters had a similar release strategy in North America and opened in the top spot with $18m. Weapons fell to second, adding $15.4m for a terrific new total of $115.7m. Freakier Friday came in third, adding $8.9m for a new total of $70.2m. The Fantastic Four: First Steps fell to fourth, adding $6m for a new total of $257.4m and The Bad Guys 2 rounded out the top five, adding $5.1m for a new total of $66.2m.
