Box Office Round-up
Tron: Ares is the latest film in the groundbreaking sci-fi series and the first since 2010. It opened with £1.8m, which is slightly less than the £2m Tron: Legacy opened with in December 2010. That film finished its run with £10.5m but had the benefit of the Christmas holidays. Hopefully Ares can enjoy a fruitful October half-term period.
On its third weekend, One Battle After Another added £1.2m, a drop of 37% from last weekend. That takes its total to £8.3m, and it is closing in on the final total of Killers Of The Flower Moon – Leonardo DiCaprio’s last film in cinemas, which finished on £10.1m. It looks like One Battle After Another has the legs to get there.
British drama I Swear opened in third with £1.2m, which includes £128k from previews. Earlier this year, The Salt Path opened with £1.5m, on its way to over £8.1m, so hopefully I Swear, a film that has been very warmly received, can have similar legs.
Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale added £457k on its fourth weekend, which takes its total to £16.9m. It is stretching its lead over the previous film, Downton Abbey: A New Era, which finished its run with £15.1m.
Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt biographical-drama The Smashing Machine rounded out the top five, adding £353k on its second weekend which takes its total to £1.6m. The last time they appeared together on screen was in 2021’s Jungle Cruise, which finished its run with £12.6m. The Smashing Machine will be tapping out way before that.
The Conjuring: Last Rites rounded out the top five, adding £511k, down 39% from last weekend. That takes its total after five weekends in cinemas to a sensational £17.3m, and it’s worth re-iterating that the previous biggest film of the series was 2016’s The Enfield Case, which finished with £11.1m.
Outside of the top five, animated adventure Night Of The Zoopocalypse opened in seventh with £264k, and canine-led horror Good Boy opened in eighth with £230k, which includes £57k from previews.
Next Weekend
Black Phone 2 is a sequel to the 2021 horror hit. As Finn, now 17, struggles with life after his captivity, his sister begins receiving calls in her dreams from the black phone and seeing disturbing visions of three boys being stalked at a winter camp known as Alpine Lake. Ethan Hawke returns to star.
Good Fortune is a comedy starring Keanu Reeves as a well-meaning but rather inept angel named Gabriel, who meddles in the lives of a struggling gig worker and a wealthy venture capitalist. Seth Rogen and Keke Palmer co-star.
Roofman stars Channing Tatum as a charismatic criminal who, while on the run from the police, hides in a hidden space of a toy store. There, he adopts a new identity and becomes involved with an employee, beginning a relationship as unlikely as it is risky. Kirsten Dunst, LaKeith Stanfield and Peter Dinklage co-star.
Gabby’s Dollhouse is a big screen version of the hit Netflix series. Gabby and Grandma Gigi's road trip takes an unexpected turn when Gabby's prized dollhouse ends up with eccentric cat lady Vera. Gabby embarks on a adventure to reunite the Gabby Cats and retrieve her beloved dollhouse before it's too late. Kristen Wiig stars.
After The Hunt is the latest film from the prolific Luca Guadagnino (Challengers, Queer, Call Me By Your Name). A college professor (Julia Roberts) finds herself at a personal and professional crossroads when a star pupil (Ayo Edibiri) levels an accusation against one of her colleagues (Andrew Garfield) and a dark secret from her own past threatens to come to light.
The Buzz
Is This Thing On? is the latest film from Bradley Cooper and is loosely based on the life of Liverpudlian comedian, John Bishop (yes, really). As their marriage unravels, Alex (Will Arnett) faces middle age and divorce, seeking new purpose in the New York comedy scene. Meanwhile, his wife Tess (Laura Dern) confronts sacrifices made for their family, forcing them to navigate co-parenting and identities. It premiered at the New York Film Festival last week and is Cooper’s third well-reviewed directorial effort in a row. The Guardian gave the film four stars saying that ‘like a great (stand-up) routine, beneath the jokes lurks something tender, grounded and real’. It should be one of the best films for ABC1 women in Q1.
