The Weekend Round-up

The Hitman’s Bodyguard has ended Dunkirk’s four week stay at the top of the box office, opening with £2m. That figure includes £367k from Thursday previews, which was enough to see it overtake Nolan’s blockbuster. Director Patrick Hughes’ previous film The Expendables 3 opened with £1.7m, so The Hitman’s Bodyguard delivered his best opening in the UK.

Dunkirk may have come second to The Hitman’s Bodyguard but it still delivered the biggest Friday to Sunday total of the weekend. Christopher Nolan’s wartime stunner added £1.9m, which takes its total to £49.1m. It has now overtaken The Dark Knight’s final total of £49.1m to be Nolan’s second biggest film and now it only has The Dark Knight Rises (£56.3m) to go.

Annabelle: Creation had a strong hold in third, falling 39%, a small percentage for a film of this kind, to £1.2m. After 10 days in cinemas it has grossed £4.8m and has a great chance of at least matching the first film’s final total of £7.5m.

The Emoji Movie had a terrific hold in fourth, falling just 14% to £1m. It has now banked £8.6m and is closing in on Cars 3, currently the second biggest family film of the summer, which sits on £10.3m.

The long-awaited adaptation of Stephen King’s The Dark Tower opened in fifth with a disappointing £911k. While the books are a cult hit and the film had a strong cast, it couldn’t overcome the lukewarm reviews.

Outside of the top five, Everything, Everything opened in ninth with £453k and An Inconvenient Sequel: Truth to Power opened in 15th with £201k, which included £154k from previews.

Overall the box office was down 8% from last weekend and down 26% from the same weekend last year, when the top four films were Finding Dory, Suicide Squad, David Brent: Life On The Road and Jason Bourne.

Next Weekend

American Made is an action comedy starring Tom Cruise as Barry Seal, a pilot who lands work for the CIA and as a drug runner in the south of the US during the 1980s. It’s based on a true story and directed by Doug Liman (Edge of Tomorrow, The Bourne Identity).

Logan Lucky is the long-awaited return of Steven Soderbergh (Ocean’s 11, Traffic, Magic Mike) to big screen filmmaking. Channing Tatum and Adam Driver play two brothers who attempt to pull off a heist during a NASCAR race in North Carolina. Daniel Craig also stars.

Detroit is a searing true-life drama from Oscar-winning director, Kathryn Bigelow (Zero Dark Thirty, The Hurt Locker). Amidst the chaos of the Detroit Rebellion, with the city under curfew and as the Michigan National Guard patrolled the streets, three young African American men were murdered at the Algiers Motel. John Boyega and Will Poulter star.

Rough Night is a raucous comedy about a group of girlfriends who hire a male stripper for a bachelorette party in Miami and things go badly wrong. Scarlett Johansson, Kate McKinnon and Jillian Bell star.

The Buzz

It is the latest adaptation of Stephen King’s mammoth novel about an evil clown that terrorises the children in an American town. When the first trailer launched earlier in the year, it broke the record for the most trailer views inside 24 hours, clocking up a remarkable 191m views. Now The Hollywood Reporter are reporting that the film is tracking to break September records in the US when it opens on the 8th. Some commentators think it could open as high as $60, which also bodes very well for its run here.

Across the Pond

The Hitman’s Bodyguard came out on top, opening with $21.6m. Last week’s number one, Annabelle: Creation, fell to second, falling 56% to $15.5m which takes its cume to $65m. Steven Soderbergh's Logan Lucky made a disappointing start, kicking off its run with $8m. Dunkirk added another $6.7m in fourth, which takes its total to $165.5m. The Nut Job 2: Nutty by Nature completed the top five, falling 38.7% to $5.1m, which takes its total to $17.7m.
