Box Office Round-up
Superman had a great second weekend, adding £4.9m, which is down just 30% from last weekend. That takes its total after 10 days in cinemas to £16.4m and it’s already the ninth highest grossing film released this year, and it’s climbing a fair few places before the end of its run. 2022’s The Batman finished its run with £40.8m, which is probably a stretch for Superman but it’s going to have a good summer and will get close.
Jurassic World: Rebirth had a sensational weekend, adding £3.3m which is up (yes, up) 2% from last weekend. That takes its total after three weekends in cinemas to £24.9m and it’s now the fifth biggest film of 2025. With the school holidays just kicking off, it has a great chance of finishing above Jurassic World: Dominion’s final total of £35.1m.
F1 The Movie posted an even better hold than Jurassic World, increasing on last weekend’s total by 8% to £1.3m. That takes its total after four weekends in cinemas to £18.2m and it’s now the seventh highest grossing film of 2025. It’s clear there’s still an appetite for this film from the general public, so hopefully it can hang on to some screens over the coming weeks.
Smurfs opened in fourth with £1.2m. This is the fourth film featuring the little blue characters, with the best performing being 2011’s The Smurfs, which finished with £17.4m. 2017’s Smurfs: The Lost Village finished its run with £6.2m so that’s the target for this new film.
I Know What You Did Last Summer rounded out the top five, opening with £942k. In terms of recent legacy horror titles returning to cinemas, it hasn’t had quite the success of May’s Final Destination: Bloodlines, which opened with £2.8m.
Outside of the top five, How To Train Your Dragon in sixth has crossed the £20m mark and is up to £20.5m. It’s another film which should do well across the school holidays.
Next Weekend
The Fantastic Four: First Steps is a new film featuring Marvel’s first family. Forced to balance their roles as heroes with the strength of their family bond, the Fantastic Four must defend Earth from a ravenous space god called Galactus and his enigmatic Herald, Silver Surfer. It’s in cinemas from Thursday.
The Bad Guys 2 is a sequel to the 2022 animated hit. The Bad Guys are struggling to find trust and acceptance in their newly minted lives as Good Guys, when they are pulled out of retirement and forced to do "one last job" by an all-female squad of criminals.
Jujutsu Kaisen: Hidden Inventory/Premature Death - The Movie is a new anime that is breaking records in Japan. It’s in cinemas from Wednesday.
The Buzz
After The Hunt is the latest film from the hugely prolific Luca Guadagnino (Challengers, Queer, Call Me By Your Name). Julia Roberts stars as a college professor who finds herself at a personal and professional crossroads when a star pupil levels an accusation against one of her colleagues and a dark secret from her own past threatens to come to light. The supporting cast includes Ayo Edibiri, Andrew Garfield, and Michael Stuhlbarg. It’s set to be one of the most talked about films of Q4 and is looking at a major festival premiere at either Venice or Toronto. It’s in cinemas from 22 October.
Across The Pond
Superman held on to the top spot with an impressive second weekend, adding $58.2m, which is down 53% from last weekend. That’s a similar second weekend drop to the The Dark Knight! Jurassic World: Rebirth stayed in second, adding $23.4m for a new total of $276.2m. I Know What You Did Last Summer opened in third with $13m, while Smurfs opened in fourth with $11m. F1 The Movie rounded out the top five, adding $9.6m for a new total of $153.6m.
