Box Office Round-up
The Devil Wears Prada 2 opened with the second biggest opening weekend of the year to date, only just failing to take the title of biggest. It opened with £9.4m and only The Super Mario Galaxy Movie has opened bigger this year, and only just too, opening with £9.4m last month. Including bank holiday Monday, The Devil Wears Prada 2 is up to £12.2m. The first Devil Wears Prada opened with £3.3m in October 2006 and finished its run with £14.2m, a total that this film will surpass in the next few days.
After an impressive opening last weekend, Michael posted a sensational second weekend, falling just 18% to £7m. That takes its total to £23.2m and after adding a further £2.6m on bank holiday Monday, it’s now up to £25.8m and is already the third biggest film of the year to date. At the same stage of its run, Bohemian Rhapsody was on £20.3m, so Michael is tracking well ahead of that. Bohemian Rhapsody finished on £55.3m.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie fell to third adding £961k across Friday to Sunday, which is down just 13% from last weekend. That takes its total to £35.7m it added a further £601k on bank holiday Monday for a new total of £36.3m. In the day or two it will overtake Zootropolis 2, which is currently on £36.3m, to become the biggest animated film released in the last year. The first Super Mario Bros. Movie finished its run on £54.9m, so hopefully this sequel can continue to creep up towards that.
Folk-horror Hokum opened in fourth with £627k, which includes £59k from previews. Six weeks ago, Ready Or Not 2: Here I Come opened with a very similar total (£615k) and so far is up to £2.1m, so hopefully that’s a realistic target for Hokum. There’s some intriguing horror films on the horizon that might have something to say about that though.
Project Hail Mary round out the top five, adding £580k from Friday to Sunday, which is down just 31% from last weekend. That takes its total to £33m and it added a further £212k on bank holiday Monday, which takes it to £33.2m. Just a reminder that Ryan Gosling’s last film in cinemas was The Fall Guy, which finished on £12.4m, so Project Hail Mary is getting close to tripling that total and it has now become the biggest film where he’s been in a lead role, surpassing La La Land’s £30.7m.
Outside of the top five, South Asian title Patriot opened in sixth with £295k.

Mortal Kombat II is the new film adapted from the popular video game. The fan favourite champions -- now joined by Johnny Cage himself -- are pitted against one another in the ultimate battle to defeat the dark rule of Shao Kahn that threatens the very existence of the Earthrealm and its defenders.
Billie Eilish: Hit Me Hard And Soft – The Tour 3D is a concert film featuring one of the 21st century’s best pop stars. It’s directed by Eilish and James Cameron.

The Buzz
Clayface is the first film to feature to DC Comics villain. Rising Hollywood star Matt Hagen descends into a horrifying revenge-filled monster when scientific ambition strips him of his identity and humanity. If they get this right, it has the potential to attract both horror fans and comic book fans. Director, James Watkins (Speak No Evil, Eden Lake) is a good choice to make it happen. It’s one of the best films for 16-34 adults in Q4 when it hits cinemas on 23 October.
Across The Pond
