The Weekend Round-up

King Arthur: Legend of the Sword opened in the top spot, kicking off its run with £2.5m, which includes £578k from Wednesday and Thursday previews.

That’s director, Guy Ritchie’s fourth biggest opening in the UK, behind both Sherlock Holmes films and Snatch. It’s an improvement on his last film, The Man From U.N.C.L.E. though, which opened with £1.5m in August 2015.

After topping the box office last weekend, Alien: Covenant fell to second, but its Friday to Sunday total of £2.1m was the biggest of the weekend. That takes its 10-day total to £10m and it is going to fall well short of Prometheus’ final total of £24.8m.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 had another decent hold, falling 41% to £1.9m. That takes its total to £36.3m, and it’s now certain to become Marvel’s third biggest film of all time in the UK, shortly overtaking Iron Man 3 (£37m) and behind Avengers Assemble (£51.9m) and Avengers: Age of Ultron (£48.3m).

Amy Schumer and Goldie Hawn comedy, Snatched, didn’t quite hit the mark, opening in fourth with £842k (including £1k from previews). Schumer’s last big starring role was in Trainwreck, which opened with £932k in 2015 and it was hoped that the addition of Hollywood legend, Hawn, would see an increase in box office but, sadly, it wasn’t the case.

The Boss Baby rounded out the top five, falling 29% to £415k, which brings its total to an impressive £26.8m.

Outside of the top five, Anne Hathaway sci-fi comedy, Colossal, opened in ninth with £151k. It was originally down for a wide release, but distributor Entertainment ended up releasing it on just 145 sites.

Overall the box office was down 26% from last weekend and down 37% from the same weekend last year, when the top four films were X-Men: Apocalypse, The Angry Birds Movie, The Jungle Book and Captain America: Civil War.

Next Weekend

Pirates of the Caribbean: Salazar’s Revenge is the fifth film in the blockbuster franchise and on this occasion, Captain Jack Sparrow searches for the trident of Poseidon. The last Pirates of the Caribbean film, On Stranger Tides, grossed £32.9m in the UK.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul is the fourth film in the popular family series. This time around, a Heffley family road trip to attend Meemaw's 90th birthday party goes hilariously off course thanks to Greg's newest scheme to get to a video gaming convention. The last film in the series, Dog Days, grossed £8m in the UK.

The Buzz

Wonder Woman is the first big screen solo outing for one of the most famous of all superheroes. Gal Gadot stars and she’s joined by Chris Pine. It opens in the UK on 1 June and the first responses are coming in and, so far, they’re universally positive. Telegraph film critic Robbie Collin tweeted ‘it's like no other DC film you've seen in years, i.e. excellent’, while Chris Hewitt, News Editor at Empire tweeted ‘I like #WonderWoman. I like it a lot. In fact, if you used the Lasso Of Truth on me, I'd even say it was terrific.’

Across The Pond

Alien: Covenant opened in the top spot, with $36.1m. Considering Prometheus opened with $51m, it continues the UK performance of opening down on its predecessor. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 fell to second but added $34.6m, which is enough to take it past the $300m mark. It’s now on $301.4m. Everything, Everything opened in third with $11.7m and Snatched fell to fourth, adding $7.8m, for a new cume of $33m. Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul completed the top five, opening with $7.1m.
