Box Office Round-up

Horror is having a legendary moment right now, with Obsession breaking out over the last couple of weeks and now Backrooms opens in the top spot at the UK box office with an incredible £4.3m. This is one of the biggest openings ever for a horror film, and A24’s biggest opening weekend ever, surpassing The Drama, which opened with £2.2m in April. Director Kane Parsons is just 20 years-old and already has a major worldwide hit on his hands.

Star Wars: The Mandalorian & Grogu fell to second, adding £2.7m, which is down 50% from last weekend. That takes its total after 10 days in cinemas to £11.3m. In 2018, Solo: A Star Wars Story opened with a Friday to Sunday total of £4.8m and finished its run with £19.4m, so that has to be the target for The Mandalorian & Grogu.

After Michael took a tumble on the exceptionally sunny bank holiday weekend, it returned to posting terrific holds, falling just 1% on its sixth weekend to £1.8m. That takes its total to £48m, further cementing its position as the biggest film of the year to date. It is closing in on Bohemian Rhapsody which finished its run on £55.3m.

Obsession is a genuine sensation. The low-budget horror added £1.6m on its third weekend, which is UP 21% from last weekend. That takes its total to £6.8m and it’s remarkable that we have two horror films in cinemas from filmmakers in their 20s that are both set to finish over £10m.

The Devil Wears Prada 2 rounded out the top five, adding £876k, which is down 24% from last weekend. That takes its total to £32.1m and it’s now the fourth highest grossing film of 2026. The first The Devil Wears Prada finished its run with £14.2m.

Outside of the top five, Tuner opened in seventh with £361k, which includes $82k from previews. Power Ballad opened in ninth with £204k, which includes £20k from previews.

Next Weekend

Masters Of The Universe is a live-action version of the hugely popular He-Man cartoon. A young man on Earth discovers a fabulous secret legacy as the prince of an alien planet, and must recover a magic sword and return home to protect his kingdom. Nicholas Galitzine, Alison Brie, and Idris Elba star.

Scary Movie is the sixth film in the horror-spoof series. Two friends find themselves caught up in mayhem involving killers, monsters and supernatural creatures once again.

Savage House stars Claire Foy and Richard E. Grant. Set in 18th century England during pox outbreak and Jacobite uprising, Sir Chauncey and Lady Savage blindly pursue a better life.

The Buzz

Disclosure Day is the latest film from Steven Spielberg It’s a UFO thriller, a genre in which he has created some of the most iconic imagery in film history. Emily Blunt, Josh O’Connor, Colman Domingo, and Colin Firth star and early reports suggest it’s one of Steven Spielberg’s best films in years (and he’s made many very good ones in recent years). IndieWire’s Jim Hemphill called it ‘top-tier Spielberg’ and ‘Right from the opening Spielberg lays down the gauntlet and reminds you that he does this stuff better than anybody in the history of film.’ The Wrap’s Drew Taylor tweeted ‘I can’t remember the last time I loved a Spielberg movie as much as Disclosure Day’ calling it ‘thrilling, funny, deeply emotional and impeccably acted’. It hits cinemas on Wednesday 10 June.
