Box Office Round-up
On a bank holiday weekend with wall-to-wall sun and heat, Star Wars: The Mandalorian & Grogu opened in the top spot at the UK box office with £5.3m, which is the fifth highest opening weekend of the year to date. Including bank holiday Monday it’s up to £6.5m. In 2018, Solo: A Star Wars Story opened with a Friday to Sunday total of £4.8m and finished its run with £19.4m, so that has to be the target for The Mandalorian & Grogu.
Michael took its first tumble, falling just 60% on its fifth weekend to £1.8m. For context, it fell 13% last weekend. That takes its total to £44.3m and it’s added a further £539k on Monday for a new total of £44.8m, further cementing its position as the biggest film of the year to date. It is closing in on Bohemian Rhapsody which finished its run on £55.3m.
Obsession is a genuine sensation. The low-budget horror added £1.3m on its second weekend, which is down just 2% from last weekend. That’s a remarkable result, considering how big every other films’ drops are. It added £355k on Monday for a new total of £4.3m and with word-of-mouth through the roof, there’s plenty more to come.
The Devil Wears Prada 2 fell to fourth, adding £1.1m, which is down 64% from last weekend. That takes its total to £30.2m and it added a further £301k on Monday for a new total of £30.5m and it’s now the fourth highest grossing film of 2026. The first The Devil Wears Prada finished its run with £14.2m.
South Asian release Drishyam 3 rounded out the top five, opening with £836k, which includes £334k from previews after opening on Thursday. Drishyam 2 finished its run with £455k in November 2022, so this sequel is seeing a significant uplift.
Outside of the top five, horror title Passenger opened in sixth with £336k, likely suffering due to the popularity of Obsession. Romantic-comedy Finding Emily opened in eighth with £213k, which includes £18k from previews.
Next Weekend
Backrooms is a horror from 20-year-old YouTuber Kane Parsons (kanepixels). After a therapist's patient disappears into a dimension beyond reality, she must venture into the unknown to save him. Renate Reinsve and Chiwetel Ejiofor star.
Power Ballad is a comedy-drama from John Carney (Once, Sing Street, Begin Again). Paul Rudd plays Rick, a washed-up wedding singer, who bonds with Danny (Nick Jonas), a fading boy band star, over music and a late-night jam session. When Danny turns Rick's song into a hit, Rick sets out to reclaim the recognition he believes he deserves.
Tuner stars Leo Woodall as a talented piano tuner whose meticulous skills for tuning pianos lead him to discover an unexpected aptitude for cracking safes, turning his life upside down. Dustin Hoffman and Havana Rose Liu co-star.
The Buzz
Wildwood is the latest stop-motion marvel from Laika (ParaNorman, The Boxtrolls, Kubo & The Two Strings). It tells the adventures of Prue McKeel as she sets off to the forests outside Portland to find her kidnapped brother. The voice cast includes Carey Mulligan, Mahershala Ali, and Jacob Tremblay and it’s once again directed by the founder of Laika, Travis Knight (Kubo & The Two Strings). The first trailer looks absolutely stunning and it’s releasing just in time for October half-term. It’s one of the standout films for the HP & CH audience in 2026.
Across The Pond
On the Memorial Day holiday weekend, Star Wars: The Mandalorian & Grogu opened in the top spot with $81m. Obsession posted an incredible hold in third, increasing on last weekend by 39% to $23.9m. That takes its total to $54.3m and it’s now heading to a total over $100m! This film reportedly has a budget of just $750k. Michael fell to third, adding $20.7m for a terrific new total of $314.9m. The Devil Wears Prada 2 added $12.7m in fourth, which takes its total to $196.2. The Sheep Detectives rounded out the top five, adding $9.23m for a new total of $43.7m.
