Box Office Round-up
The live-action Moana opened in the top spot at the UK box office with £2.9m, which is clearly not quite where Disney were expecting. Last year, the live-action Snow White opened with £3.9m but didn’t have the entirety of the school summer holidays ahead of it. It finished on £11.7m, which Moana has to be confident of topping.
Toy Story 5 fell to second on its fourth weekend, adding £2.5m, which is down 57% from last weekend. That takes its total to £42.4m and it’s now the second biggest film of 2026 to date and with the school summer holidays still one week away, there’s plenty more to come too. Toy Story 4 finished its run with £66.2m, which is a realistic target for this fifth film.
Minions & Monsters added £1.7m on its second weekend, which is down 61% from last weekend. That takes its total to £7.4m, which is undeniably disappointing for the usually huge animation franchise. The lowest performing Despicable Me film to date is the very first one, which finished on £20.2m. Minions & Monsters still has a chance of getting to that.
Evil Dead Burn opened in fourth with £912k. which includes £216k from previews. The 2013 reboot of the series finished its run with £3.4m, which is a realistic target for this third film. Evil Dead Wrath is set to hit cinemas next year.
The Invite rounded out the top five, adding £430k, which is down 46% from last weekend, the best hold in the top 10. That takes its total to £1.8m and last year, Babygirl finished on £4.5m, which is an optimistic target for The Invite.
Outside of the top five, Obsession continued its legendary run and has now crossed the £18m mark. It’s up to £18.2m which means it looks nailed on to surpass last year’s biggest horror, The Conjuring: Last Rites, which finished on £18.3m.
Next Weekend
The Odyssey is the latest film from Christopher Nolan and stars Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Charlize Theron, Samantha Morton, Lupita Nyong’o, Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson and more. After the Trojan War, Odysseus faces a dangerous voyage back to Ithaca, meeting creatures like the Cyclops Polyphemus, Sirens, and Calypso along the way.
The Buzz
Don’t Look Back In Anger is a documentary about the Oasis reformation and tour of summer 2025. Featuring exclusive behind the scenes footage and never-before-seen concert footage, it should be a treat for the million-plus people who saw the tour last year, and the millions more who were unable to get tickets. It’s one of the best films for ABC1 men in September when it hits cinemas on 9 September for 16 days.
