Box Office Round-up

Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale promised to be a big climax to the much-loved series, and so it delivered, opening with £4.4m. The previous film in the series, Downton Abbey: A New Era, opened with £3.1m in April 2022, so this third instalment has increased on that significantly. A New Era finished its run with £15.1m, so The Grand Finale has to be looking at a total above that.

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba Infinity Castle posted an incredible £3.5m opening weekend, the biggest opening ever for an anime title. There have been three other Demon Slayer films in cinemas over the last four years, and last year’s entry, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba To The Hashira Training, finished its entire run with £917k. Infinity Castle beat that total in one day.

The Conjuring: Last Rites fell to third and had something of a tumble after an incredible opening weekend. It fell 59% to £2.8m which takes its total to £12.4m. In just 10 days it has become the highest grossing film in the series, surpassing 2016’s The Enfield Case, which finished with £11.1m.

The Long Walk opened in fourth with £1.2m, which includes £40k from previews. This is the third Stephen King adaptation to hit cinemas in 2025, after The Monkey in February and The Life Of Chuck in August. The Long Walk has opened the biggest of the three, surpassing the £1.1m The Monkey opened with.

Olivia Colman and Benedict Cumberbatch comedy-drama The Roses rounded out the top five, adding £939k. That takes its total after three weekends in cinemas to £7.4m. It’s just over £2m behind Wicked Little Letters, which finished on £9.6m, so The Roses has to be aiming for a total north of £10m.

Outside of the top five, the sequel to one of the best movies of all-time, Spinal Tap II: The End Continues, opened in seventh with £215k.

Next Weekend

A Big Bold Beautiful Journey stars Margot Robbie and Colin Farrell in an imaginative tale of two strangers and the unbelievable journey that connects them.

The Buzz

Song Sung Blue is a brand new musical drama starring Kate Hudson and Hugh Jackman as Lightning and Thunder, a Milwaukee husband and wife Neil Diamond tribute act who experience soaring success and devastating heartbreak in their musical journey together. The film features many of Diamond’s most famous songs, performed by two hugely likeable stars. It should be a hit with ABC1 women across January and February and could even be an outside bet for Oscars. It’s in cinemas from New Year’s day.

Across The Pond

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba Infinity Castle posted the best opening ever for an anime title with a huge $70m. The Conjuring: Last Rites came in second, adding $26.1m for a new total of $131.1m. Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale opened in third with a solid $18.1m, while The Long Walk opened in fourth with $11.5m. The 30th anniversary re-release of Toy Story opened rounded out the top five with $3.5m.
