Box Office Round-up

Bob Marley: One Love is the year’s first big surprise success, opening with a terrific £7m, which includes £2.7m from previews after opening on Wednesday. Music biopics have had an up and down time post-Covid, with Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance With Somebody finishing on £11.7m, and the Aretha Franklin biopic Respect finishing on £2.2m. Bob Marley: One Love looks like finishing well north of I Wanna Dance With Somebody.

Migration fell to second but is still doing great business adding £2.8m, an increase of 11% from last weekend. It’s now up to £13.6m and has banked an impressive £10m in the past seven days. Over the next week it should overtake the final total of Trolls Band Together (£15.6m).

Sony’s comic book film Madame Web came in third opening with £2.3m, which includes £939k from previews after opening on Wednesday. Sony’s Marvel films include the Spider-Man films, Venom and Morbius. Morbius is the lowest grossing film with £6.5m, but it looks like Madame Web may take that unwanted crown.

Argylle fell to fourth, adding £545k, which is a drop of 45% from last weekend. That takes its total after 18 days in cinemas to just over £5m and it’s going to fall short of The King’s Man’s final total of £8m, making it Matthew Vaughn’s lowest grossing film since his debut Layer Cake.

Wonka is back in the top five with £425k, an increase of 3% from last weekend. That takes its total to £62.2m and it’s now the 25th highest grossing film of all time in the UK & Ireland.

Outside of the top five, Anyone But You continues to pull in the crowds. The film has now crossed the £10m mark and is closing in on £11m, an amazing result.

The Buzz

Deadpool & Wolverine is the third film in the irreverent Marvel series starring Ryan Reynolds. This time around, Deadpool is promising to change the history of the MCU and has brought back Hugh Jackman as Wolverine for what should be one of the biggest films of 2024. The first trailer launched during the Superbowl two weekends ago and was reportedly watched by 365 million people in the first 24 hours, making it the biggest trailer launch in history. It’s in cinemas from 25 July.
