22 Jump Street Holds Strong At Box Office

The Weekend Round-up

The top four films of last weekend remained in exactly the same spots this weekend with a lack of any major new entries. 22 Jump Street topped the box office for the second consecutive weekend, adding £2.3m for a cume of £9.8m. Before next weekend it will have overtaken 21 Jump Street’s final total of £10.1m.

Maleficent had another strong weekend, falling 40% to £1.6m and a cume of £13.6m. If it maintains its current rate of decline it will surpass both Oz: The Great and Powerful (£15.3m) and Snow White and the Huntsman (£15.8m).

X-Men: Days of Future Past added £902k in third and has now reached £24.8m. That means it has overtaken The Amazing Spider-Man 2 to become the second highest grossing film of 2014 so far but it’s still some way behind The Lego Movie in first place (£34.1m).

Edge of Tomorrow has a solid hold falling just 40% to £744k and now has a cume of £5.7m. On its third weekend in 2013, Oblivion fell 59%, so Edge of Tomorrow is holding up better than Tom Cruise’s last sci-fi blockbuster. The highest new entry, Oculus completed the top five with £413k. Considering it opened with $12m in the US, using the one tenth rule we could have expected it to get closer to £1.2m in its opening weekend here. The other new entries, Belle in sixth (£407k), Devil’s Knot in ninth (£122k) and T.S. Spivet in 14th all failed to trouble the top five.

Unsurprisingly on the first weekend of the football World Cup, the box office was down 44% from last weekend and down 58% from the same weekend last year, which saw Man of Steel open with £11.2m.

Next Weekend

The Fault In Our Stars opened with $48m in the US last weekend and although the book isn’t quite as well known here in the UK, it should still perform strongly. Clint Eastwood’s adaptation of stage musical Jersey Boys also opens and will be hoping to lure an older audience. Finally, Kevin Costner stars in action thriller 3 Days To Kill.

The Buzz

Chef received rave reviews from all who attended last week’s DCM Tuesdays screening and it’s in cinemas on 25 June. Reviews for Begin Again have started coming through in the US and apparently it’s an engaging comedy with a great performance from Mark Ruffalo. It’s out in the UK on 11 July.
