March 2012 has something for everyone and sees a wealth of quality releases estimated to draw 14 million pairs of eyes to the big screen.
The month opens with Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters. This action-comedy follows the duo with a sweet tooth 15 years after their traumatic gingerbread-house incident as they seek to track and kill witches all over the world. The fairy-tale adaptation is set to take a healthy £3m in the box office and is likely to attract a predominately 18+ male audience. Read more

With each new Nicolas Cage film, it’s always fun to guess which Nicolas Cage is going to feature; the wild-eyed, intense, crazy Cage (Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans, Drive Angry) or the wild-eyed, yet more sedate Cage (Kick-Ass, Knowing). Justice features the second type.
It’s a revenge thriller with a twist; with Will Gerard (Cage) enlisting the help of a vigilante group after his wife (January Jones) is brutally attacked and raped. The group kill her attacker but events become more complicated six months later when they contact Gerard again and begin to blackmail him into carrying out further vigilantism ‘justice’ on their behalf. The cameras were flashing as we attended the UK premiere of In Time at London’s Curzon Mayfair. The stars were out in force with Justin Timberlake, Amanda Seyfried and Cillian Murphy all in London for the occasion. The 70's style futuristic interior of the Curzon auditorium somehow fit the subject matter of the film, which recalled the dystopian sci-fi films of the 70's, such as Logan’s Run and Soylent Green.
Introducing the film, director Andrew Niccol (Gattaca, Lord of War), aside from instructing us on the correct way to pronounce Seyfried’s name (Sigh-Frid, apparently), introduced us to some of the weighty concepts the film explores, while Timberlake introduced us to the aesthetic qualities of his co-star Cillian Murphy. Digital Cinema Media (DCM) today announced an exclusive partnership with Primesight one of the UK’s leading outdoor media owners.
This deal will see DCM installing an initial one-hundred interactive poster units in its cinema foyers as part of a multi-million pound digitisation of its estate. Rolling out in some of the biggest sites in the UK including ODEON Leicester Square, Cineworld at the O2 and the highly anticipated new Vue cinema at Westfield Stratford City, this joint venture will allow advertisers new ways to engage and interact with customers across the cinema experience. The London Film Festival is hotting up as another potential award winner causes a stir. Writer and director Alexander Payne’s latest big screen offering comes in the form of the comedy-drama The Descendants.
DCM were down at the BFI festival today to catch the latest flick from the former Oscar winning director (won for Sideways, best adapted Screenplay). This is Payne’s third adaptation from a novel, telling the story of a middle-aged father (George Clooney) who tries to re-connect with his two daughters after his wife has a severe boating accident which leaves her in a coma. Despite the serious plotline, it is predominantly a coming-of-age film, even though the film’s central character happens to be over 50, and follows the father’s struggle to patch together his family whilst also facing the decision to sell off one of the last areas of virgin Hawaiian land, passed down to him from his Hawaiian ancestors.
George Clooney is brilliant playing the unassuming and grieving father who tries hard to become a good parent to his daughters and to provide them with sound advice. When questioned at the BFI London Film Festival Press Screening today about what best piece of advice his father gave him in his life, Mr. Clooney answered simply “don’t mix grain and grape”.
As with real-life, the film perfectly blends together comedy with drama and tragedy, and is of a similar tone to Payne’s past productions (Sideways, About Schmidt).
Combined with a well-crafted screenplay and witty dialogue, there is no wonder why this film has already awards buzz surrounding it. Recommended if you also liked Juno or Little Miss Sunshine, the film will play well to an upmarket and mature audience.
Those of you who would like to catch a glimpse of the man himself, George Clooney will be attending the Centrepiece Gala for the BFI London Film Festival tonight in Leicester Square. The Descendants will release UK-wide on 27th January next year.

DCM’s resident film guru hit the west end today to check out the London Film Festival’s gala screening of Ides Of March. It appears Clooney is quite the chameleon lately, as he not only stars in the movie but also wrote and directed it to boot!
After a question and answer session with the stars of the flick, our guru had the privilege of seeing one of the first UK screenings of the film. He had this to say about it "The Ides of March boasts a stellar cast in this powerful political drama. The IT actor of the moment, Ryan Gosling stars as the fresh-faced and ambitious young presidential campaign staffer who gets his first real taste of the dirtier side of politics. The story is ultimately about compromise and raises the questions of “is it worth it?” and how far would you go to achieve your goals. Read more
