Gravity 3D's arrival has been long awaited and arguably, the event film of the year didn’t disappoint.

Alfonso Cuaron’s space thriller Gravity 3D opened with £6.2m, which included £619k from Thursday previews. The Friday to Sunday total of £5.6m is the seventh highest of the year, knocking last weekend’s big opening Thor: The Dark World into eighth. Read more

DCM Tuesdays plays host to an exclusive Q&A with Framestore before Gravity 3D

Digital Cinema Media’s highly anticipated DCM Tuesdays took its audience on a spectacular space journey with an exclusive screening of the recently released blockbuster, Gravity 3D, yesterday evening. Prior to the movie, guests were presented with an unique Q&A session hosted by DCM’s resident film specialist, Tom Linay, with Gravity’s very own Creative Director Mike McGee and VFX Producer Charles Howell.

The team discussed the challenges they encountered when embarking on the momentous film project, explaining Director Alfonso Cuaron's misson, that since they were unable to film in space itself, they should make sure people believed they were really there. Read more

DCM and Yummi’s new ‘cinime’ app rolls out nationwide with PlayStation®

Digital Cinema Media is to roll out its cinime app, developed with technology partner Yummi, across more than 180 selected cinemas nationwide this month. As part of the cinime experience, DCM has created an on-screen interactive quiz for PlayStation®, planned by Manning Gottlieb OMD, to test cinemagoers’ film knowledge at the start of the pre-show.

Developed by the cinema industry for the cinema industry, the cinime app aims to entertain and engage people before and after the movies. The app harnesses bespoke audio watermarking and image recognition technology to deliver and unlock brand and film-related content on smartphones. It has been developed using Yummi’s technology platform phonix (with audio watermarking from Intrasonics), the only system of its kind in the marketplace to provide a full campaign management system with a combined  series of background detection technologies that syncs and triggers content without the need for a 3G or Wi-Fi connection. Sony launches stunning 4K Ultra HD ad

Sony has launched a stunning television and cinema ad to mark the arrival of its 55” and 65” X9 4K Ultra HD televisions and demonstrate the pioneering 4K technology behind their latest launch. The ad showcases the fantastic visual that 4K produces, in four times the detail of Full HD, with its creative played in the extraordinarily sharp, refined detail that is usually limited to cinema screens.

Created by McCann London, the ad features eight million colourful petals, representing the eight million pixels contained within the 4K television screens, exploding from a Costa Rican volcano then flowing through exotic locations down to a local village. Read more

Screen Awards 2013: Celebrating a year of the Big Screen

The great and the good of the cinema industry got together last week to celebrate a year of excellence in film distribution, marketing, advertising and exhibition at Screen International’s fourth annual Marketing and Distribution Awards.

The awards pay tribute to any film of any size that exceeds the expectations of its target audience – whether a £100m breaking film such as Skyfall or a foreign language film like No that resonates with a small, but passionate audience. Read more

The Tyneside Cinema teams up with Sanderson Weatherall to go greener

Newcastle’s Tyneside Cinema has set out to become one of the most environmentally friendly arts facilities in the UK. With its very own ‘Green Team’ in tow, the cinema seeks to build on its existing commitment to sustainability, as well as its on-going action to minimise its carbon and environmental impacts.

The eco-friendly decision coincides with the cinema’s recent partnership with its long term property management partner, Sanderson Weatherall, who has joined forces to implement carbon reduction measures that will come into place alongside the cinema’s upcoming £1.3m expansion. Read more

UK Box Office 1 – 3 November 2013

Thor: The Dark World dealt a hammer blow to all other contenders this weekend, comfortably taking the top spot. The Marvel sequel debuted with a god-like £8.7m, which includes £3.1m from Wednesday and Thursday previews. The £5.6m Friday to Sunday total is the seventh highest of the year, ahead of The Hangover Part III (£4.9m) and behind Star Trek Into Darkness (£6.9m).

The first Thor opened with £5.4m (including £2.3m from previews) in 2011 and finished on £14m, so Thor: The Dark World is already well over half way to overhauling that total. Over 50% of Thor: The Dark World’s gross was from 3D presentations. Read more
