UK Box Office 4 - 6 April 2014

Rio 2 flew to the top of the box office this weekend with £2.9m. That figure was boosted by preview figures of 703k but it was still comfortably more than the first Rio managed in April 2011 (£1.5m). Over 35% of Rio 2’s box office was from 3D presentations. Just behind with £2.8m, Captain America: The Winter Soldier grossed the highest from Friday to Sunday and with a cume of £10.9m, it has already overtaken the first film’s final total (£10.4m).

Noah sailed into third with £2.5m, which is the second highest opening for director Darren Aronofsky, just behind 2011’s Black Swan (£2.8m). Divergent took fourth with £1.8m and although that’s not quite as impressive as its huge US opening, the book isn’t quite as well known in the UK so it’s still a strong performance and its status as the new young adult franchise is assured. Fruit Bowl secures Vue Kids AM sponsorship via Digital Cinema Media

Fruit Bowl has entered into a six month sponsorship of Vue’s Kids AM weekend film programme to promote its range of products. The UK fruit snack brand is using the cinema slot from 5 April to drive brand awareness of the Fruit Bowl range of products. Sponsorship of Vue’s Kids AM offers the brand an opportunity to reach its target market, in a shared environment on family days out. The sponsorship deal was handled by Digital Cinema Media (DCM) and UM Media London.

The cinema exclusive campaign includes a 30” creative running in family films throughout the term of the sponsorship, supported by foyer activity such as product sampling at key sites, static quad posters, digital 6-sheets, inclusion in Vue’s printed and digital magazine and online activity across Vue’s web properties. All of these opportunities combined are predicted to generate over 60m OTS for the brand over the course of the sponsorship. Read more

ITV Presents: The 2014 Spotlight Lecture – The Golden Age of Bullshit at Advertising Week Europe

What kind of shmuck comes all the way from San Francisco to London to talk about bullshit? Bob Hoffman, in his own words, is who.

Introduced to the stage by ITN broadcaster Mark Austin, Hoffman, author of The Ad Contrarian and partner of Type A Group, presented a frank and provocative discussion on how ‘bullshit’ has come to be a powerful weapon that has gone on to cause damage to consumers, clients and ultimately ourselves. We were warned that the three objectives of his talk were to annoy people, contradict everything we were likely to have been told at Ad Week so far and have us leave the building feeling sceptical and uncomfortable. The auditorium of media and advertising professionals was about to have years of their industry beliefs torn apart. Read more

BBH Presents Full Circle at Advertising Week Europe - ‘How advertising went on a journey and arrived back at the start’

BBH delivered a reflective talk on Tuesday at Advertising Week Europe, with comparisons on the structure of the advertising industry from two employees who both started as grads there two decades apart. Rebecca Sampson, Junior Designer, Digital Cinema Media (DCM) reports.

Gyn Jones, of the class of ’87 and now Group CEO at BBH, immediately raised a chuckle with an anecdote of two contrasting days in his early employment at BBH, a glamorous overseas Levi’s shoot, followed by stock-checking feminine sanitary products at a Croydon supermarket. His purpose, in illustrating that his training balanced both the creative and the data, was to suggest that this was something that had been lost in the fragmented, specialism-oriented marketing approach of today. Love Cinema This Summer

Summer is almost here and along with cricket, beer gardens and under-cooked BBQ food, it means that many of the biggest films of the year are just weeks away from filling cinemas. As always, there’s something for just about everyone with huge sequels, new superheroes and original high-concept sci-fi. It’s without doubt the most exciting time of year for fans of big budget spectacle.

April may currently feel like a long way from summer but it’s now when the first big summer blockbusters are released, and they don’t come much bigger than The Amazing Spider-Man 2. The first Amazing Spider-Man successfully rebooted the franchise with Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone and swung its way to £26m at the box office. The sequel is looking bigger and better, with Jamie Foxx as Electro making a suitably formidable villain. Read more
