Arrival has been touted as one of the best sci-fi films in recent years and it duly had an impressive opening, kicking off its run with £2.9m, which included £354k from Thursday previews. That’s director, Denis Villeneuve’s best opening yet, beating last year’s Sicario (£1.6m) and 2013’s Prisoners (£1.4m). Read more

The Weekend Round-up
Doctor Strange opened in the number one spot last weekend, and this weekend it had a great hold, falling just 37% to £3.4m (once previews are removed). For comparison, Thor: The Dark World, the last Marvel film to be released in October, fell 47% on its second weekend. Read more

The nominations for the 2016 British Independent Film Awards (The BIFAs) were announced yesterday, with Ken Loach’s I, Daniel Blake scoring the most, with seven. Andrea Arnold’s American Honey, Babak Anvari’s Under The Shadow and Peter Middleton and James Spinney’s Notes On Blindness received six nominations each. DCM will also be partnering with the ceremony for the first time. Read more
