Latest Cinema Advertising Association (CAA) figures show cinema to be bucking the media downturn, with 2008 marking a bumper year for cinema admissions.
Overall, cinema admissions have grown 1.1% year-on-year, standing at 164.2 million for the year, from 162.4 million in 2007. 2008 also marked the highest summer cinema admissions for 40 years, with UK’s cinema venues attracting over 50 million visitors (53,642,237) between June and August this year, an increase of 5.6% year on year and standing as the most successful summer cinema period since 1969, with July the best month for admission in 2008 (over 21 million). Digital Cinema Media (DCM) is ramping up its commitment to 3D cinema as figures reveal that box office smash Avatar raked in more than 75% of its UK takings from the 3D format.
Figures from DCM suggest James Cameron's space epic has been a hit with 3D fans,with the new format accounting for 78% of its takings in the UK. The remaining 22% viewed film sans garish 3D spectacles. Read more

The new figure marks a year-on-year increase of 3.8 per cent and ranks as the strongest October for cinema admissions in four years.
To date, the overall cinema admissions for 2009 stand at 142.3 million, a 2.7 per cent increase on the same period in 2008. Computer- animated comedy-adventure film UP, which was released in 3D in 261 sites, was the number one cinema release for October.Raking in almost £28m since its release on October 9th, the film took an impressive five times more than the second most successful film of the month, The Invention of Lying. Airline pollution activists Plane Stupid are on a collision course with the advertising regulator after launching a graphic cinema campaign that sees CGI polar bears falling to bloody deaths to highlight the impact of carbon emissions.
Plane Stupid's ad, which breaks in cinemas and online today, features dozens of animated polar bears falling from the sky onto a city centre, bouncing off skyscrapers and landing in the street and on the roof of a car, accompanied by blood-spurting special effects. Read more

Volkswagen is launching Polo’s Timeless Film Festival, offering cinemagoers the chance to take a friend to see their favourite film at the cinema for free.
The Festival will be supported by a cinema ad campaign, created by advertising agency DDB London. The ad promotes VW’s latest Polo model and engages 35-55 year old women by tapping into their favourite films and leisure time. Read more
The one week push is part of an ongoing campaign to raise awareness of the Barry M make-up brand and sees it use the specific film – Fame – to target its key audience of 16 to 24-year-old females. It will be backed by TV and online advertising.
The 30-second commercial shows a rock chick model walking towards the audience carrying an electric guitar. As she performs the first chord she is surrounded by ribbons of colour, whilst her make-up continuously changes, demonstrating Barry M’s 400-plus palette of cosmetics. The camera pans in to a close up of the model’s eye make-up before a voice-over intones: “Barry M. Wake up your make-up.” Read more
