UK Box Office 7 - 9 December 2012

Like a festive Avengers, Rise Of The Guardians 3D ascended to the top of the box office this weekend easing 19% to £1.6m. Wit a cume of £4.1m, showing that it is well on its way to becoming a family favourite. Last December, Puss In Boots opened with £2m, almost exactly the same as Rise Of The Guardians last weekend, and went on to gross £1.3m on its second weekend on its way to a final total of £15.6m. It’s not unreasonable to assume a similar level of performance for ROTG.

Skyfall dropped back to second spot with a further £1.4m, taking its tally to a record breaking £96.3m, smashing the previous record set by Avatar in 2009. It has not just been a success in the UK, it has grossed over $918m worldwide and may well break the $1bn barrier, which is an amazing achievement in itself but even more impressive when you consider that the last and previously highest grossing Bond film, Quantum Of Solace achieved $586m worldwide. UK Box Office 30 Nov - 2 Dec 2012

Bond is back! Well, back at the top of the UK box office. Another £2.3m on Skyfall's sixth weekend of release for the all-conquering blockbuster takes it to £94.1m and it has now become the UK’s highest grossing film of all time, beating Avatar. An incredible achievement from one of the UK’s best loved film franchises. The film that kept Skyfall from the top spot for the previous two weekends was relegated to second place as The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2 fell 59% to £2.2m. It still managed to surpass Breaking Dawn Part 1’s final total of £31.1m to become the biggest grossing Twilight film. It now stands on £31.4m and a final total of around £35m looks likely.

In third place was this week’s highest new entry and the year’s big Christmas animation, Rise Of The Guardians 3D.  A healthy £2m opening puts it on almost on a par with last year’s big Christmas themed film, Arthur Christmas, which opened with £2.1m. With three further weekends before Christmas, expect it to improve on that opening figure quite considerably. 42.5% of its box office came from 3D presentations. Fourth spot was taken by the other Christmas film currently on general release, Nativity 2: Danger In The Manger, which fell 25% from last weekend to £1.2m and a cume of £3.2m. Read more

UK Box Office sees biggest one week admissions this century

Figures just released reveal that the week commencing 26 October 2012 saw the highest admissions to cinema in the UK this century, at over 7.5m. Furthermore, the month of October has seen industry admissions, which totalled 16.8m, up 24% from the same period in 2011 and the biggest October in terms of admissions for nearly a decade.

The release of the 23rd James Bond movie, Skyfall, has made this October huge. Bond’s return has easily beaten the one week box office record, previously held by Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows (£18.1m) with £33.1m. Read more

UK Box Office 23 - 25 November 2012

The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Pt 2 had the strongest second weekend for a Twilight film with £5.3m taking its cume to £27m after ten days. At the same point, Breaking Dawn Pt 1 had grossed £23.3m, which suggests that Breaking Dawn Pt 2 will finish a few million higher than that film’s final total of £31.1m.

On week four of Bond-watch, Skyfall is up to £89.6m and it is without question now a case of when, not if, it’ll pass Avatar’s final total of £94m to become the highest grossing film in UK history. The next question is whether it can reach £100m, a total that was almost unthinkable four weeks ago. Before the weekend it was £14.2m away from £100m and it grossed a further £3.8m over the weekend. Back in January, War Horse opened with just over £3.9m and went on to reach £18.6m. If Skyfall performs similarly, it should comfortably pass £100m. Read more

That's A Novel Idea…

“It’s not where you take things from, it’s where you take them to”, wise words from Jean-Luc Godard. Hollywood has never been afraid to take a successful novel and translate the magic to the big screen.

There’s a good reason for Hollywood adapting novels, attracting an upmarket audience. This is good news for advertisers as research shows that these audiences prefer premium products, have a 10% higher than average income and are predominately AB consumers. They are early adopters and key influencers in their peer groups. Read more

Does New Technology Distract The Audience From The Main Event?

Mindshare’s Huddle session tabled a great debate: is new technology distracting us (the audience) from the main event?

In our case we were there to understand reactions to the movie on the cinema screen, but much of the debate was relevant to other ‘events’ around which social media and virtual experiences are growing – sporting occasions and concerts for instance. Read more

It’s also by some distance the highest opening of 2012 beating The Dark Knight Rises (£14.4m) and Avengers Assemble (£13.2m).
