DCM in the Press - Bringing in audiences other places cannot reach, by Mindi Chahal

Speaking to our independent cinema colleagues recently, alternative content is a growing and thriving area on many of your schedules. Cinemas are not the only places looking for new and innovative ways to draw audiences. Using venues outside of their main purpose can attract new people, which means marketers can extend their brands’ reach through partnerships and sponsorships.

Following the excitement of the London 2012 Games, the Olympic stadium will soon house music events with major summer concerts moving from Hyde Park in 2013. Marketing Week’s Mindi Chahal, takes a look at what is arguably the biggest change in the use of a venue in recent years and how the trend is spreading in other spheres including cinema, read on for her coverage on events in our industry. He may been knocked off his perch last weekend but he made it back to the top a week later, Wreck-It Ralph 3D eased less than 1% to £3.4m and a hugely impressive cume of £18.6m. It’s only a matter of time before Ralph overtakes Tangled’s final total of £20.5m and closes in on Brave’s £22.6m.

A Good Day To Die Hard fell 50% (not including previews) to £1.6m and dropped to second place in the process. It now has a cume of £8.2m and it’s going to have a hard time overtaking Die Hard 4.0’s final total of £13.9m. Creepy horror Mama was the highest new entry, in third place with £1.5m. That’s an improvement over both Insidious’ and Sinister’s £1.4m debuts in 2011 and 2012, respectively. Both those films went on to gross over £6m. Read more

It was a good weekend to Die Hard as the fifth installment in the franchise, A Good Day To Die Hard topped the box office. An opening weekend of £4.6m, including a whopping £1.3m from Valentine’s Day was enough to knock Wreck-It Ralph 3D into second place. Although it’s slightly lower than Die Hard 4.0’s £5m opening in 2007, which opened on a Wednesday, the previous installment had the benefit of an extra day.

Last week’s number one, Wreck-It Ralph 3D, dropped to number two, despite outperforming A Good Day To Die Hard from Friday to Sunday. A further £3.4m takes its cume to £10.5m and, with half term this week, expect the big performance to continue. Read more

The Glasgow Film Festival 2013 officially kicked off on 14 February and DCM’s Rebecca Rau was there to share the evening with DCM Close Up.

A glitzy Opening Gala featured the UK Première of the classy French comedy Populaire, followed by a glamorous after-party that echoed the froth and fancy of the stylish rom-com. Director Régis Roinsard was in attendance and charmed the audience, inviting them to travel back in time with him to 1950s France, and announcing his love for Scotland by declaring; “When I was a kid, I wanted to be Scottish and immortal,” referring to his obsession with the film Highlander at the age of 11. Wreck-It Ralph 3D duly smashed it this weekend. A £4.5m debut is the highest opening for a Disney animation since Tangled in 2011 (£5.1m) and is a big improvement on their February offering last year, The Muppets (£2.7m). Both those films finished comfortably over £15m, so expect the same from Wreck-It Ralph 3D.

The biggest film of the year so far, Les Misérables finally vacated the top spot after four weeks, falling to second and £1.6m. It has now grossed £33.5m and a finish in the high thirties is expected. British romantic comedy I Give It A Year made a solid start with £1.4m which compares favourably with the debut for The Five Year Engagement last year (£1.1m) and with Valentine’s Day arriving this Thursday, it should have a strong week. For the third week in a row the top two spots were filled by the same films. Les Misérables was number one for the fourth successive weekend, falling just 31% to £2.8m and crossing the magic mark of £30m in the process. It now sits on £30.1m and with a way to go yet is laying a strong early claim to be the biggest film of the year. Django Unchained held onto second spot easing 30% to £1.7m and has joined the limited club of 18-cert films to cross the £10m mark. It now sits on £10.3m and may have the legs to beat Pulp Fiction (£12.7m) and become Tarantino’s most successful film.

The highest new entry, landing in third spot was Denzel Washington thriller Flight. A £1.4m debut is a decent start and we’re seeing most awards films holding up very well from week-to-week so expect the same with this one. Proving this theory, Lincoln fell just 17% to £1.4m in fourth spot and after 10 days has grossed a solid £4.2m. Life Of Pi 3D rounded out the top five with yet another strong hold falling 24% to £843k and a magnificent cume of £27.3m. Read more
