Blockbuster season is here again, so the time has come to forget about depressing arthouse dramas for a while, and cheer yourself up with some rousing Hollywood escapism. Just look at what May alone has to offer. For starters, there's Godzilla, which features a town being sluiced by a tsunami, and Bryan Cranston bellowing: "It is gonna send us back to the stone age!" Then there's X-Men: Days of Future Past, which reduces a city to a murky graveyard of fractured skyscrapers. Or how about Tom Cruise's latest, Edge of Tomorrow, in which alien invaders lay waste to half the planet? And before all those, there's Paul WS Anderson's Pompeii: the ideal night out if you want to see crowds of terrified women and children being fried by flaming boulders. Read more
Dolby Laboratories has announced that upcoming feature Godzilla, directed by Gareth Edwards, will be mixed and released in the Dolby Atmos cinema sound platform.
The film, from Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures, will be released in the US on May 16, 2014. Warner Bros. Pictures is handling worldwide theatrical distribution, with Toho Company handling distribution in Japan. Read more
The Weekend Round-up
Over the long weekend The Amazing Spider-Man 2 climbed to the top of the box office with an impressive £10.8m, which includes Wednesday and Thursday previews of £2.9m. The Amazing Spider-Man opened with £11.1m in 2012 but that was from a Monday start, so included £4.3m of previews. In terms of Friday to Sunday, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 was just behind its predecessor with £6.1m versus £6.8m, 53% of its box office was from 3D presentations. Read more

Thor: The Dark World’s final total of £20.1m may be out of reach but it’s still a strong performance. Noah moved up one spot to second, with £1.6m for a cume of £5.9m. That’s a decent hold and with Easter this week, it may get a seasonal boost. Read more

Leading travel company and 'home of all-inclusive', First Choice, has launched a new partnership with Vue Entertainment, aimed at bringing the ‘all-inclusive feeling’ to life in the UK. The partnership deal has been organised by Digital Cinema Media (DCM).
The First Choice ‘All-Inclusive Family Package’ ticket, available at 80 Vue cinemas nationwide, includes entry into a film, a snack of choice and a drink. There will also be a kid’s snack box option available for mini film buffs.
