Box Office - The Hobbit retains top spot

The Weekend Round-up

The Hobbit: The Battle Of The Five Armies stayed in the top spot, adding £4.2m, and to date has grossed $28.8m, making it the fourth biggest film of the year. It’s certain to be the highest grossing film released in 2014, but it will probably overtake The Lego Movie next Friday or Saturday, so will not finish 2014 as the year’s biggest film. Read more

Getting Under the Skin of an Extraordinary Year

DCM's Head of Film, Tom Linay, takes a look back at 2014, getting under the skin of an extraordinary year for film in a blog post written for The Huffington Post.

It is often said that there's never a bad year for cinema and 2014 emphatically proved that. In a year when cinema admissions were down on the highs of the last few years and no single film crossed the £40m mark for the first time since 2003, it would be easy to be pessimistic about the current state of cinema. Then you look at the success stories of the year. We saw the two highest grossing 18-certificate films of all time, a film like 12 Years A Slave out-grossing Transformers: Age Of Extinction, Marvel introduced a whole new team of superheroes in the freshest and funniest sci-fi adventure since we first visited a galaxy far far away and, when the biggest film of the year to date is the wonderful The LEGO Movie, you realise that everything is awesome. Box Office - The Hobbit stays at the top

The Weekend Round-up

On the final weekend before Christmas The Hobbit: The Battle Of The Five Armies stayed in the top spot, holding off a couple of high profile sequels. Peter Jackson’s trilogy closer was off 45% to £5.4m and after ten days in cinemas has cracked the £20m mark. It now sits on £20.3m and at the same point in its run The Desolation Of Smaug fell 43% and sat on £20m. In the next few days, The Battle Of The Five Armies will crack the top 10 films of the year and with nine more days left of 2014, it should climb pretty high up the list before the year is out. Box Office - The Hobbit wins the Battle

The Weekend Round-up

For the final time (supposedly) a Middle Earth-set film opened at the top of the box office. The Hobbit: The Battle Of The Five Armies kicked off with £9.8m, which is the second highest opening weekend of the year, behind The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 (£10.3m) and it also set a Friday to Sunday record for the series. An Unexpected Journey opened with £11.6m in 2012 but £2.1m of that was from Thursday previews, so its Friday to Sunday total was £9.5m. The Desolation Of Smaug had a Friday start last year and managed £9.3m in its first weekend. Read more

The Weekend Round-up

The UK’s favourite bear comfortably held on to the top spot this weekend, with a strong hold that suggests there’s plenty more to come. Paddington fell just 25% to £3.8m and in doing so cracked the £10m mark. In just ten days it has already overtaken Rush to become StudioCanal’s third biggest film of all time, behind The Imitation Game and Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, which it will overtake in the next week or so.
