San Diego Comic-Con returned in-person for 2022, for the first time since 2019, from Thursday 21 to Sunday 24 July.

Thousands of movie and TV fans came together at the San Diego Convention Center for the weekend, sporting an array of cosplay that they’d had longer than usual to prepare and perfect.

Despite this break, attendees were treated to a special first-look at a wealth of upcoming films from major studios, as well as a number of special guest appearances to amplify the excitement to new heights!

The biggest talking point of the weekend was the long-awaited trailer for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever finally being revealed. With a UK release date of 11 November, a week before the launch of the football world cup, this superhero movie sequel is set to be one of the biggest films of the year. After the tragic passing of Chadwick Boseman in 2020, both fans and critics were unsure of what route the second instalment of the Black Panther franchise would take. However, by the looks of the trailer, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is set to be a dramatic, emotional and moving spectacle and we’re forecasting it to deliver a huge 23 16-34 TVRs.

Aside from film trailers, Marvel Studios also released its Phase 5 and Phase 6 plans, including two new Avengers films to be released in 2025.

Shazam! Fury of the Gods was the next trailer to be revealed at Comic-Con 2022. Another superhero sequel, this time from the DC universe, and was introduced on the DC panel by the film’s star Zachary Levi. Shazam! Fury of the Gods is set to hit UK cinemas at the very end of 2022, on 23 December.

The DC panel also introduced another trailer, by another big star. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson made a dramatic appearance dressed as his character from Black Adam, to introduce an exclusive new trailer of the film. As this year’s big anti-hero movie, Black Adam looks to have a darker tone and offer a different perspective to other DCM films released this year. Black Adam will be screening in cinemas across the UK from 21 October 2022.

Another big hit coming to screens in 2023 is Dungeons & Dragons: Honour Among Thieves, which fans were also treated to a trailer for. This fantasy action-adventure film is based on the popular tabletop role-playing game, something many Comic-Con attendees will be familiar with, and will be released in cinemas in March 2023. The movie adaptation stars some big names, including Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Regé-Jean Page and Hugh Grant.

Another action-packed trailer shown for the first time at Comic-Con 2022 in San Diego was a new trailer for John Wick 4. Star Keanu Reeves and director Chad Stahelski made a surprise appearance at the end of a panel hosted by Collider to introduce the new trailer to excited fans. Look out for the latest John Wick film in UK cinemas in March 2023.
