The nominations for the 2016 British Independent Film Awards (The BIFAs) were announced yesterday, with Ken Loach’s I, Daniel Blake scoring the most, with seven. Andrea Arnold’s American Honey, Babak Anvari’s Under The Shadow and Peter Middleton and James Spinney’s Notes On Blindness received six nominations each.
The ceremony takes place on Sunday 4 December at Old Billingsgate in London and we’re delighted to announce that for the first time, Digital Cinema Media will be a media partner of the awards. DCM’s Director of Marketing and Insight, Zoe Jones, commented on the partnership: “DCM is proud to support independent cinema and celebrate the huge amount of talent in the UK film industry. The BIFAs have firmly established themselves as a true champion of independent film in the UK and we’re delighted to be partnering with them.”
Other notable films amongst the nominees are Tom Geens’ Couple In A Hole, which joins American Honey, I, Daniel Blake, Notes On Blindness and Under The Shadow in the Best British Independent Film category. Ben Wheatley is nominated for Best Director for LFF closing film, Free Fire and nominees in the Best International Independent Film category include Manchester By The Sea and Moonlight, which DCM’s Head of Film, Tom Linay said is the best film he’s seen in 2016.
The Richard Harris Award, to honour the outstanding contribution to British film by an actor is to be announced in November, with previous winners including Jim Broadbent, Daniel Day-Lewis, Helena Bonham Carter, Ralph Fiennes, Michael Gambon, Julie Walters, Emma Thompson and Chiwetel Ejiofor last year.
SPECTRE actor, Naomie Harris will receive The Variety Award, which recognises a director, actor, writer or producer who has made a global impact and helped to focus the international spotlight on the UK. Previous winners is an illustrious list, including Kate Winslet, Benedict Cumberbatch, Paul Greengrass, Jude Law, Kenneth Branagh, Liam Neeson, Sir Michael Caine, Daniel Craig, Dame Helen Mirren and Richard Curtis.
It should be a glittering ceremony that celebrates the very best in independent filmmaking.
