Box Office: Wicker Weaves its Way to the Top

Wicker topped the box office over the weekend with £1.8m.

Box Office Round-up

Wicker generated buzz with its first teaser a few months ago, with brands jumping at the chance to reference the material at the title of the film, and that buzz has turned into box office receipts as it topped the box office over the weekend with £1.8m (including £98k from previews). Olivia Colman starred in Wicked Little Letters, which opened with £1.6m in 2024 and showed terrific legs to get to £9.6m. We’re in the middle of a busy period for releases so that might be out of reach for Wicker, but it’s still a great start.

Primetime continued A24’s hot-streak, opening in second with £1.7m, which includes £459k from previews. Earlier this year, A24 had The Drama and The Invite in cinemas. The Drama finished on £10.3m, while The Invite finished on £4.4m. Primetime is likely to finish around The Invite’s total.

Ghosts: The Possession of Button House topped the box office last weekend and posted a solid hold on its second weekend, adding £1.5m, which is down just 37% from last weekend. That takes its total to £6.3m. The journey from the small screen to the big screen is not always a successful one but Ghosts: The Possession Of Button House can safely be added to the success pile. Dad’s Army had a big screen release in 2016, opening with £2.1m and finishing its run with £8.7m, so that’s a target that Ghosts: TPOBH looks like it will hit.

Clayface is the latest film in the DC Universe. It added £1.2m on its second weekend, which is down 36% from last weekend. That takes its total after 10 days in cinemas to £4.7m. Earlier this year DC’s Supergirl finished its run with £5.8m, which Clayface should surpass.

Wildwood rounded out the top five, adding £647k, which is down 37% from last weekend. That takes its total after 10 days in cinemas to £2.8m. Laika’s last film in cinemas was 2019’s Missing Link, which opened with £648k and finished its run with £3.6m, so Wildwood looks set for a total north of that.

Outside of the top five, Forgotten Island, Street Fighter, Shaun The Sheep: The Beast Of Mossy Bottom and Other Mommy have all crossed the £5m mark in the last week.

Next Weekend

Wild Horse Nine is the latest film from Martin McDonagh (The Banshees Of Inisherin, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri). John Malkovich and Sam Rockwell play CIA agents Chris and Lee who face a trust-testing mission from Santiago to Easter Island during 1973 in Chile. It’s in cinemas from Wednesday.

Godzilla Minus Zero stars Godzilla. Set in 1949, the Shikishima family confronts a fresh catastrophe two years after surviving their previous ordeal with the legendary monster. It’s on IMAX screens from Tuesday.

Ramayana: The Rise of a Legend is reportedly the biggest Indian production of all-time. An ancient epic, it follows a young prince and princess whose marriage and subsequent exile mark the beginning of a legendary journey. Their story of love, duty and destiny sets the stage for greater challenges ahead. It’s in cinemas from Thursday.

George Michael: The Faith Tour is a concert film featuring the greatest recording artist of the past 50 years.

I Play Rocky is about the making of Rocky. It’s the true story of an unknown actor who believed he wasn't meant to just write Rocky, but to play Rocky Balboa. Facing constant rejection, Sylvester Stallone risks everything, refusing to give up the lead role against impossible odds.

La Bola Negra is a Spanish drama that is a genuine Oscars Best Picture contender. It explores what it means to be gay throughout different eras, focusing on "three existences" that are connected through themes of sexuality, desire, pain, and inheritance.

The Buzz

Buddy is a low-budget horror that broke out in North America, particularly with Gen-Z audiences, grossing $27m there. It’s about a group of children trapped inside a surreal 1990s Barney & Friends-style children's television series who must find a way to escape their malevolent unicorn television host. It was the subject of controversy in the US as families took their children to see it and were shocked by the dark subject matter (despite it being R-rated). With an expected 15 cert here, we’re unlikely to have the same issue when it hits cinemas on 27 November.

Across The Pond

Documentary sensation You Can See Everything came in top, adding $10.6m, which is down 43% from last weekend and takes its total to $63.9m Clayface fell to second, adding $10.4m, which is down 56% from last weekend and takes its total to $44.1m. Wicker had a great weekend in third, adding $4.1m, which is down just 28% from last weekend and takes its total to $13.3m. Street Fighter added $3.2m in fourth for a new total of $53m, and BTS World Tour 'Arirang' in São Paulo: Live Viewing rounded out the top five with $2.8m.
