Box Office Round-up

Spider-Man: Brand New Day added £3.6m on its fourth weekend, which is down 41% from last weekend. That takes its total after 26 days in cinemas to a ridiculous £87.2m and it is now the 9th biggest film of all-time in the UK & Ireland. This week it will overtake Avengers: Endgame and take eighth spot in the list. A potential £100m total is still on, a total only two films have reached in the past (Skyfall and Star Wars: The Force Awakens). In terms of previous Tom Holland Spider-Man films, Homecoming finished on £30.8m, Far From Home finished on £37.4m and No Way Home finished on £97.3m. A remarkable box office progression.

The Odyssey delivered a terrific sixth weekend, adding £2.8m, which is down just 26% from last weekend. That takes its total to a HUGE £75m and it is now the 15th biggest film of all-time in the UK & Ireland. It would have been comfortably the biggest film of the year in 2024 and 2025 and there’s a chance it overtakes Top Gun: Maverick, the biggest film of 2022, which finished with £83.9m.

Insidious: Out Of The Further was this weekend’s highest new entry, opening in third with £2.2m. This is the third best opening in the six-strong franchise, and only just behind the previous film, Insidious: The Red Door, which opened with £2.3m and finished on £8.1m – the best finish in the series.

The End Of Oak Street fell to fourth, adding £930k, which is down 56% from last weekend. That takes its total after 10 days in cinemas to £4.6m. This time last year, Weapons opened with £2.6m and had terrific legs to get to £11.9m. It looks like The End Of Oak Street won’t get to those heights but it’s still a solid performance.

Spa Weekend opened in fifth with £494k. Female ensemble comedies have been a bit thin on the ground recently, but Spa Weekend has opened above One Of Them Days, which launched with £203k in March 2025.

Outside of the top five, South Asian release Bethlehem Kudumba Unit put in a strong performance, opening with £439k, while it wasn’t a great weekend for Jason Statham as the usually reliable star saw his latest film, Mutiny, open in ninth with £373k.

Next Weekend

The Dog Stars is the latest film from Ridley Scott (Alien, Blade Runner, Thelma & Louise, Gladiator, The Martian). In a post-apocalyptic world, a virus wipes out humanity. Survivors face roaming scavengers called Reapers. Protagonist Hig, a pilot, survived the flu but lost his wife. Jacob Elordi, Margaret Qualley, and Josh Brolin star and it’s in cinemas from Wednesday.

Bitter Christmas is the latest film from Pedro Almodovar (Talk To Her, All About My Mother, The Skin I Live In, Parallel Mothers). In 2004, an ad director faces a turbulent Christmas weekend. In 2026, a filmmaker turns her story into a screenplay, blurring the lines between reality, fiction, and the people closest to him.

Harry Potter And The Philosopher’s Stone (25th Anniversary) is the re-release of the popular story about a wizard who goes to private school.

The Buzz

The Debut stars Julianne Moore as Mona, an unassuming housewife who is unexpectedly cast in a community theatre production. She goes on to lose herself in the role under the spell of a strong-willed director (Paul Giamatti). This is the next film from Jesse Eisenberg, whose previous film, A Real Pain, was nominated for two Oscars, winning one. The Debut looks to be one of the stand-out films of early 2027 awards season, when it hits cinemas on 15 January, and before that, it closes the BFI London Film Festival in October. It’s one of the best films for ABC1 women in Q1 2027.

Across The Pond

Spider-Man: Brand New Day stayed in the top spot with $39m, which takes its total to $855m and it’s now the second biggest film of all-time in North America and it’s coming for the number one spot. Insidious: Out Of The Further opened in second with $25.3m. The Odyssey came in third, adding $19.5m, for a new total of $539.1m. Paw Patrol: The Dino Movie came in fourth, adding $9.1m for a new total of $35.4m and The End Of Oak Street rounded out the top five, adding $9m for a new total of $38m.
