Box Office: Resident Evil is another gaming to cinema hit

Resident Evil continues the recent success of films based on video games, opening with £4.2m at the UK box office.

Box Office Round-up

Resident Evil continues the recent success of films based on video games, opening with £4.2m at the UK box office. That’s by far the biggest opening weekend for a Resident Evil film and is bigger than the lifetime total of every Resident Evil film (there’s been seven in cinemas before this one), except 2010’s Resident Evil: Afterlife, which finished its run with £4.8m. The last Resident Evil film in cinemas was 2021’s Resident Evil: Welcome To Raccoon City which finished its run with £585k.

Practical Magic 2 fell to second, adding £1.5m, which is down 46% from last weekend. That takes its total after 10 days in cinemas to £5.6m and the first Practical Magic finished its run in 1999 with £3.4m, so this sequel has already comfortably surpassed that.

Shaun The Sheep: The Beast Of Mossy Bottom opened in third with £1.5m, which includes £454k from previews. The first Shaun The Sheep Movie finished its run with £13.8m in 2015 and the sequel, Farmageddon, finished with £7.1m in 2019. This third film is likely to finish closer to Farmageddon than the first film.

Pressure came in fourth, adding £1.1m, which is down just 26% from last weekend. That takes its total to £4.3m after two weekends in cinemas. This is a World War II drama and in November last year we had two of those in cinemas, The Choral finished on £4.3k and Nuremberg finished on £3.6m, so Pressure has already surpassed both of those, with plenty more to come.

The Odyssey rounded out the top five, adding £587k, which is down 34% from last weekend. That takes its total to a HUGE £85.8m and it is now the 11th biggest film of all-time in the UK & Ireland. It would have been comfortably the biggest film of the year in 2024 and 2025 and it has now overtaken Top Gun: Maverick, the biggest film of 2022, which finished with £83.9m.

Outside of the top five, Spider-Man: Brand New Day has crossed the £99m mark in sixth, making it the third biggest film of all-time in the UK & Ireland. Bad Apples opened in eighth with £487k, which includes £51k from previews over National Cinema Weekend.
