Box Office Round-up
Christopher Nolan does it again. The Odyssey has gone and delivered the second biggest opening weekend of the year to date at the UK box office, opening with a huge £12.6m. This is second only to Toy Story 5 (£14.4m) and it is up there with the biggest opening weekend in The Dark Knight series. Nolan’s last film was Oppenheimer, which opened with £10.8m and went on to become his biggest film in the UK & Ireland with £59.8m. The Odyssey looks like it might take that crown by the end of its run.
Toy Story 5 came in second on its fourth weekend, adding £1.7m, which is down 33% from last weekend. That takes its total to £45.3m and it’s the second biggest film of 2026 to date. With the school summer holidays now underway, there’s plenty more to come too. Toy Story 4 finished its run with £66.2m, which is a realistic target for this fifth film.
The live-action Moana fell to third, adding £1.5m on its second weekend, which is down 47% from last weekend. That takes its total after two weekends in cinemas to £5.5m, and hopefully a solid summer holiday period will see it surpass Snow White’s £11.7m.
Minions & Monsters added £1.2m on its third weekend, which is down 32% from last weekend. That takes its total to £9.4m. The lowest performing Despicable Me film to date is the very first one, which finished on £20.2m and with the school holidays now under way, Minions & Monsters still has a chance of getting to that.
Evil Dead Burn rounded out the top five, adding £304k, which is down 57% from last weekend, and takes its total to £1.7m. The 2013 reboot of the series finished its run with £3.4m, which looks a little out of reach for this third film.
Outside of the top five, Obsession continued its legendary run and posted the best hold in the top 10. It’s up to £18.6m which means it has surpassed last year’s biggest horror, The Conjuring: Last Rites, which finished on £18.3m.
Next Weekend
Animal Farm is an animated adaptation of George Orwell’s novel. Andy Serkis directs and the voice cast includes Glenn Close, Seth Rogen, Steve Buscemi and Kathleen Turner.
The Buzz
The Uprising is the latest film from Paul Greengrass (Captain Phillips, The Bourne Supremacy). In plague-ravaged 14th century England, a peasant triggers a rebellion against King Richard II and unintentionally becomes a legend of resistance. The excellent cast includes Andrew Garfield, Jamie Bell, Cosmo Jarvis, and Thomasin McKenzie. It looks like it should be a hit with fans of The Odyssey, and in particular, ABC1 men. It’s in cinemas on 9 October.
Across The Pond
The Odyssey opened in the top spot with a huge $124.5m, which is Christopher Nolan’s biggest opening outside of The Dark Knight series. Moana fell to second, adding $19m for a new total of $82.1m. Minions & Monsters added $14.8m in third for a new total of $137.6m, and Toy Story 5 also added $14.8m for a new total of $430.9m. Evil Dead Burn rounded out the top five, adding $5m for a new total of $24.2m.
