The Weekend Round-up

Fifty Shades Of Grey held on to the top spot on its second weekend and on Saturday it became the biggest grossing 18 certificate film of all time, overtaking The Wolf Of Wall Street’s £22.7m and after ten days in cinemas the raunchy drama has grossed £25.2m.

Big Hero 6 held on to second spot, making the most of the half term holiday, increasing by a chunky 40% to £2.6m. It has now earned £16.2m and has banked £6.3m since last weekend.

Shaun The Sheep Movie stayed in third, also making hay during half term, increasing 38% to £2.4m. It has now earned £10.3m.

Kingsman: The Secret Service fell to fourth but had a strong hold on its fourth weekend, falling just 25% to £1.2m. To date it has earned an impressive £13.4m and has overtaken Kick-Ass’ final total of £11.8m. It has a good shot at overtaking X-Men: First Class (£15.1m) to become director, Matthew Vaughn’s biggest film.

This week’s highest new entry, The Wedding Ringer completed the top five, opening with £990k, which included £164k from Valentine’s day previews.

Outside of the top five, Project Almanac opened in sixth with £868k, which included £373k from half term previews. Lower down the top 15, cybercrime thriller, Blackhat opened in 14th with a disappointing £147k.

Unsurprisingly, the box office was down 32% from last weekend but up 5% from the same weekend last year, when the biggest films were The Lego Movie, Mr. Peabody & Sherman, Tinker Bell and the Pirate Fairy and Monuments Men.

Next Weekend

The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel is in cinemas on Thursday. The first film was a surprisingly big hit in 2012, grossing over £20.4m in the UK alone. It was specifically aimed at a more mature audience and we’ll have to wait and see whether they turn out for the sequel but the draw of seeing Judi Dench and Maggie Smith on the big screen again, should be enough for more than just the oldies.

Focus is in cinemas on Friday. Former box office king, Will Smith has had a rocky couple of years but this sparky romcom was praised by DCM’s Jeremy Kolesar and Lissa Cardell, who were both lucky enough to attend the UK premiere.

It Follows is out on Friday. I’d go as far as saying it’s the best horror film for years but with a relatively small distributor in Icon, don’t expect a big performance at the box office.

Finally, Jennifer Lopez thriller The Boy Next Door is also out. Having banked a solid $34.9m in the US to date, it will be hoping to lure people looking for another steamy thriller after Fifty Shades.

The Buzz

Hot Tub Time Machine 2 opened in the US at the weekend and after the first film was a decent hit, it was hoped that the sequel could repeat its performance. Sadly it opened with a dreadful $5.8m, which suggests it’s going to struggle in the UK too when it goes on release in April. Julianne Moore picked up the Oscar for Best Actress on Sunday night, for her role in Still Alice, which should boost the box office for the only awards contender still to be released in the UK. It’s out on 6 March.

Across The Pond

Fifty Shades of Grey fell a huge 74% on its second weekend to $22.3m and after ten days in cinemas has grossed $129.2m. Kingsman: The Secret Service was in second, falling 49% to $18.3m and to date has grossed $67.9m. The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water held on to third, adding $16.6m for a strong cume of $126.2m. Kevin Costner drama McFarland, USA was the highest new entry in fourth with $11m. The DUFF completed the top five with $10.8m.
